  • May M&G-Herring Bay

I wanted to get a jump on planning the May M&G at Herring Bay.

Dates available- Sat, May 5 or Sat, May 12 (Sat, May 19 is my anniversary and it will be the last fishing trip I ever take if I plan it for that weekend )

I have a buddy that kayak fishes and lives about 4 blocks from the launch. I have talked to him about having a BBQ at his place after fishing. Everyone could bring something or pitch in for food/beer. Would this be ok with everyone or would you guys like to hit a bar/restaurant?

Most of the bar/restaurants around there are on the pricey side with not-so-great food since it is a "resort" town. There is at least one which is decent (Neptune's) that we could hit if that is what everyone wants.

    Please post your thoughts

The first weekend in May I will be out of town at a graduation. I will not be available until the 12 or 19th of May.

More specifically I will not be available until the 12 or 19th of May. Your cookout is a great idea. Who knows, maybe we can catch crabs too.

            Nay_Sayer,

Will the rockfish and perch be in full effect by May 5th?

I am very interested in making it out to this event as i enjoy light tackle perch fishing and have been told this areaholds tons of good sized fish on oyster bars during the summer.

I'm fine with whatever weekend. Just need 2 weeks notice so I can request off. I went ahead and requested off every 2nd sat for the whole year. Told my boss I'm volunteering at an animal shelter. Which is true...just not on saturdays. Just gimme that 2 weeks so I can change my schedule. And I would def go for a bbq! Fun in the sun!

It's possible, and at the rate at which water temps are climbing, more probable that the non-resident rockfish will be spawned out and back in the ocean heading north easily by May. But there is nothing we can do about that!! I live in the area of Herring Bay and fished it growing up. If the temps are warm enough we may catch some nice flounder, we will probably catch some bluefish, and if you want to go after them the crabs are there as well. There will also be plenty of resident rockfish however they are usually smaller in size, the linked can always be lurking though

Not sure if I'll be able to make it yet, but where is Herring Bay anyways?

                  BBQ sounds good to me!

MDFishin pretty much summed it up. The rocks are likely to be hit or miss. The WP should be there in full force by that time. The crabbing is great (crab alley runs through there). Not sure about the flounder, they haven't been up that far much recently. I caught one last summer from a pier on the Deale side of Herring Bay but it was a shock to everyone, including DNR, since they never see them anymore.

Herring bay is on the Western Shore of the Chesapeake from about Deale to Rose Haven/Holland Point. It's right next to Chesapeake Beach/North Beach and across the Bay from Poplar Island. The launch is a small AA County park on Route 261 in Rose Haven, MD. I'll post a map and photos when I get home and have more time this evening.

I say go with the traditional second sat of the month for a M&G. Just my 2 cents.

There's a good chance that croakers will be there also as there have been reports of some being caught in the Bay already.

I'm game for any Saturday in May.
