  • Weekend fishing

I flew back late last night from Maine and was just too tired to get up this morning and drive to the Eastern Shore for flounder fishing...hope springs eternal, but being 66 creeps up on you with a dose of reality- I just don't have the energy to do what I did a few years ago- stay up all night, drive three hours, fish all day and drive home- so today, I will prepare for my trip tomorrow to the Eastern Shore- rested and refreshed-

Next week is opening day of the spring striped bass trophy season, so this is my one spring flounder trip to scope out new waters and try to bring home a nice big, fat doormat-

Question is does anyone want to join me in Stockton, MD (George Island Landing)? Get there early and fish the falling tide all morning into the early afternoon?

I didn't go to Stockton today after all. I went to go to CBBT (see report) instead. Oh well, I do hope to join you at Stockton, or wherever, for big flounder fishing some day.

Trophy season starts next week, so I'm thinking about trolling/jigging for cows in the deep channels. Or maybe work the pilings at Bay Bridge East.

some people call it getting old, and some call it 'getting wiser'. sometimes fishing fits in the nooks and crannies of life and other times you need to slice out a chunk of time to be able to enjoy it.

Well- I did it- got up at 2:45 am and drove 156 miles to Stockton- nice launch- shallow bay but all in all, pretty sweet-
I threw my cast net a lot around the launch but no bait fish. Put in at 7 am and headed out in Chincoteague Bay. Fished buck tails and Gulp three and 4 inch mullet....found some promising looking bottom about two miles from the launch- noticed the tide was running against the southwest wind and getting bumpy. I headed up past Mill Island about five miles to the deepest part of the channel- suddenly the wind went from a light breeze to a full howling 30 mph...you can't believe how rough it got. I have a new appreciation for the seaworthiness of my Outback...

Did you get any flounder or have any hits? I know what you mean about a new appreciation. I've paddled my Tarpon in some windy conditions lately, and leaning into the wind and feeling it blow against the paddle blades really makes me miss the Revo.

Got a lot of sea lettuce and seaweed on the bucktails- I really didn't have much of an opportunity to catch flounder, Bill- the winds were so tough it was un-fishable- I tried to get to the North end of Mill Island but I was taking water over the cockpit and it was nearly broaching on top of the waves- I had to turn around and get back in- even back close in to the launch it was really choppy and the following waves made the ride a challenge- I was glad to get back to the launch without a lot of water in the hull-

When I launched it was nice- light breeze cool but not cold-two hours later it was something else-

Congrats on a determined try. Next time the fish ought to beware of the hunter!

Phooey, that sucks. Especially after the iron man trip. At least you got to do some recon.

I was a little further south of you with a few other guys, we were 1/4 of the way into paddling back and that same wind hit us. It felt like it was just a big wing gust...that never stopped. It was crazy how fast it started.

On another note I spent another 8 hours on assateague this today after leaving chingcoteage isalnd. I was rewarded around 6 pm My first descent sized Rock from the beach so it definitely made my weekend a whole lot better.

Congratulations on a nice surf caught striper- always fun to surf fish and get them in skinny waters up close to the beach- makes you wonder why boats go so far off shore when you are trying to get your bait/lure just a few more yards out past the breakers-

I was hoping to meet you this weekend but that will wait for another day- it was crazy the way the gust came in so suddenly- one minute it was a light breeze then a hard SW gust that never stopped- and the shallow bay had wind/tide driven waves bigger than the depth of the water- I would have never guessed that was possible- Stockton has a really nice , well maintained launch with lots of parking- big County government sign say no overnight camping or sleeping in vehicles- the channel is easy to follow out so no danger of grounding- only drawback is the grass and seaweed growing in the bay, but that also hides baits, so...

Nice fish, dude. Your a beast for even making it out there. Glad you finally nailed one. After a trip to Plaze Tapitia and a big Coors Light J.C. and I were done. Im dragging @ss big time this morning. Between the wind and current, most every muscle in my body hurts.
