Thanks, Matt. Didn't know that. More reason to go to PLO.
Whitt (and others)
- PLO is a state park. I think the entry fee is $5.
- Launch is next to a marina/store. A small sandy area for yak launch is there. The launch is maybe 150 feet from the parking lot.
- It's about a two mile yak ride from launch to the deep channel I plan to fish. Before you get to that area, you can fish the more protected area for croaker or flounder. I think you can even try for specks at the inlet just 200 yards from the launch.
- Bring 3/4 to 1 1/2 ounce jigheads (with bkds, gulp minnows, other plastic) for jigging or trolling for stripers. You can also troll using deep dive crankbaits. Use 1/2 to 1 ounce bucktails tipped with whatever for flounder. You can jig with white grub worms for croaker, but I prefer squid, shrimp and bws.
So, you have a choice of what to do. Last year, this place was a M&G spot for MKF yakers. We had a great time there.2015 Hobie Outback (yellow)

PLO is over a 2 hour drive for me too, but I need to fish
Have been looking at some reports:
- Not sure if the croakers will be at PLO, so it'll be fun trying; some folks say they may be in deep water; if they are marked on the FF, hope they bite
- Same with flounder; not sure if they'll be there
- Alewives have been reported there, so it may be a good idea to try to catch some for striper bait; I think you can use sabiki rigs for them; not sure how else to catch them - squid? Shrimp? Or may stop by the Tackle Box to pick up alewives or other frozen bait2015 Hobie Outback (yellow)

Will be starting on shore friday afternoon then planning to launch around 6 am from PLO. I'll be fishing the Light house (bay side) trying to catch bait (or croaker if I'm lucky) by rod and throwing a cast net in hopes of some alewives. I was there last week and there were a TON of silver sides swimming around. Alewives were of the larger size so not sure if I'm going to be able to net them from shore. Never had any of them hit my bait ever in my life. I usuall caught them when they bit into my line. Strange, but I guess their mouths get stuck on the line with the soft bone lining around their mouths.
I'll try to catch whatever bait I can to supply. I have an orange prowler trident 13 so feel free to approach and ask. If I caught enough bait I will be more then glad to supply. The best time spent is time that doesn't feel like it was spent at all. When it's worth it you'll give everything to do it all over again no matter what the cost.

You will be fishing a falling tide if you are launching at 6 a.m. Saturday morning- That isn't a bad thing as dead low tide is sometime around nine a.m.
If you can catch some live bait, think about live lining big baits for big fish- Use your fish finder to find the depths for the fish- Figure the big cow stripers are hungry and want a good meal- they are not looking for snacks this time of year-
I think we are right back on schedule- after an abnormally warm winter we had a cold April. The rain we just had is a Godsend- We need some fresh water in the Bay for a successful spawn- any rain should just improve things- thunder and lightning is a different story- when I first hear thunder rumbling, I pull in my rods and head for the beach- don't want to play with electricity.
I am toying with an early morning Saturday launch, but I hate opening day crowds of dumb ass boaters that are chasing schools of gulls- they will run right over the top of you and at the very last minute turn to just miss your yak- while you hang on for dear life-it seems like Southern Maryland attracts the worst of these- some of them seem to think it is funny to see if a kayaker can ride out massive wakes. Looking at possible launch sites, I am looking at St. J's Creek (figure it will be busy with boats), PLO has many things going for it, but boat traffic is going to be a factor, and Piney Point- it is a ways up the Potomac and may not be where the action is- should have somewhat less boat traffic, though...choices, choices...then there is the fickly weatherman predicting thunderstorms...
Oh, yeah, the fellows who put in my new central air system- the helper is a commercial fisherman and runs traps in the Wicomico River by Cobb Island- he told me that he is catching croakers and he caught a 24 inch snakehead in his traps in Mitchell's Creek behind Cobb Island-Last edited by ronaultmtd; 04-20-2012, 07:08 AM."Lady Luck" 2016 Red Hibiscus Hobie Outback, Lowrance Hook2-7TS

Wind forecast is about 10 mph with isolated thunderstorms and 50% chance of rain. Not bad, but will decide this evening to see if it's a go for me. Those thunderstorms scare me.
I plan to try a sabiki rig for those alewives. If I get lucky, I may try to live line those things using a 7/0 offset circle hook. If not, will jig and troll with lures. If I see you out there, dson, I'll assume you caught tons of alewives and maybe I'll swing by for a couple of bait requests.2015 Hobie Outback (yellow)

Right now Tufnick- I am leaning on launching from Piney Point- 95% sure that is my launch- PLO is just going to be too crowded for me- I have had some pretty good luck out of Piney Point and got to know the waters- Bill and I caught some nice stripers there last December-"Lady Luck" 2016 Red Hibiscus Hobie Outback, Lowrance Hook2-7TS
