  • MKF Crab feast/fish fry part II

I have received word that the white perch are in in large numbers and size at Herring Bay. To that extent, I would like to set up another fish-fry/cookout for MKF with fishing in Herring Bay and festivities at my place.

In addition to that, I was talking to Moc and he brought up the wonderful idea of an MKF crab feast. Since crab alley runs right through Herring Bay and the pinchy bait-stealers are big and plentiful now, it only seemed natural to combine the fishing, crabbing, and feasting into a big old day of fun on/by the bay.

We were thinking that Saturday, June 30 would be a great day for the festivities. Same deal as last time, I'll provide the hot dogs, buns and potato salad and the place to hold the meal. Everyone can volunteer to bring whatever they want except Metroman who is required to bring the fryer oil.

What a gracious host. Now, all you MKF's who where taking about when and where would we have an MKF crabfeast, here you go. Put your trotline and crab cages where you mouth is. Nay_sayer is only 15 mins from the crabbing and perching waters. With many MKF kayaks running trotline and cages, we should catch a few bushels. I can bring a burner and crab pot. Who is avaible and willing. We should give our gracious host a head count so he knows who will decend upon his house.

Wow, just posted and we already have 4 to the crab derby. I guess this is where those who are new to kayak crabbing can join in and learn how to catch those tasty crustaceans and see how to rig up their yaks. Nothing better than fresh crabs and fish cooked right out of the water. Come take notes boys and girls.

Sounds like a great time! Hoping to make this one.

What are the equipment/bait reqirements for successful kayak crabbing?

It all depends on the kind of yak you have. The easiest that most people start off with are topless crab traps, baited with raw chicken like necks or legs. The Topless traps can come pre-rigged with a 10 to 15 foot line tide to the cage and a float. Another method is hand lining. Just a crabline (available at Walmart and tackle shops) with a chicken neck tide to the end. You will need a crab net with this method. Then there is the trotline. Too much to go into it now, but that is another method that requires a Hobie pedal yak, or an electric powered yak for it to really work.

Here is video that I did of running a trotline.

Here is another one by Metroman:

Sounds awesome. I'd love to bring my trotline as well, but Herring Bay is a bit far from me. I may change my mind though

                      MOC,
I'm going to try copying your videos over to the long kayak crabbing thread so the new folks can have a running documentary and different styles of kayak crabbing. This year I'm going to add the snoods to see if it's any different.

Metro, that was the first I'd seen your video.
After missing the first one, you slam dunked that second one!

My first attempt ever was also an epic fail. At that point, I thought it was impossible. I think my weights were not only too light, but I had too much slack in my line. It led to a huge mess. Good thing you had the crab whisperer with ya!

Noooooooo! When I talked to Moc I was under the impression that you and him had both thought that the 30th was a good date. I am fine with moving the date up or back to make it work for you. I know you were the other driving force behind the crab feast.

We talked about it, but hadnt discussed the actual date. I don't wanna inconvenience others. But the 30th is definitely out for me because of the cookout we are having. If I miss it, there will be plenty of other opportunities. Let me know!
