Those temps are too cold for this old fart. My lower temp limit is 50 degrees and rising.

Friday sounds pretty nice- Mattawoman Creek is pretty sheltered waters launching out of Slavins-Figure I'll fish for LM Bass, crappie and catfish- I will release all the LM Bass but not so with Crappie and Blue cats

You guys crack me up. I think I may be in Doc Irv's camp. 50 degrees and rising; just like the old Johnny Cash song "Five Feet High and Risin'

Face it, winter's a bitch. The fish are no dummies either, they hate it too which is why most are in 60' plus water where 60 degrees +. Good news is days are getting longer starting TODAY!

I'm good for Friday if the weather holds. PM me later in the week and we can figure out the time. I've never caught a crappie, so maybe you can give me some pointers. I think Anglers still has minnows if that's what you plan to use.

Will do- cold is no problem if you are sensible about it- I might ask you to pick up some minnows for me- Fred's in Waldorf stops carrying them after a while-

I might be interested in fishing Mattowoman on friday too if you guys dont mind another joining. I have shrimp, spot and will get worms and minnows for cats.
I seem to remember someone doing well with chicken livers for cats?

Yep- liver works- so does shrimp- my favorite catfish bait is menhaden or alewife chunks- minnows on UL jig heads under quill bobbers for crappie and small Rapala firetiger crankbaits-

I've seen Moc catch them on Beef liver a few times, holds on the hook better than chicken liver.

Chimo- I seem to remember you fished with us last winter and got a big Blue at the Mattawoman up by the little creek

Yup, that was my first decent blue cat actually and on the bunker you brought along, thanks again Although it seems like that was closer to March than the winter. I like using creek chubs, alive or dead as well as bunker. Never been much for liver

Yep, you're right- my logs says it was February, Chimo and it was a nice warm day- windy but sunny and warm- 45-50 degrees- I remember there were a bunch of us fishing that day- I ended up with five nice size eating cats and two nice crappies- I had mud minnows and chunks of bunker- caught cats on both baits- released all the ones over 27 inches- too big to eat good- your fish was estimated at thirty to thirty five pounds- nice fight and release- she should be well over forty pounds today- and hanging out in about the same places-

Blue cats tend to prefer fresh cut bait. You will catch more channels on chicken liver. Both taste good. (cats, not the bait)

I dont tend to keep the channels, unless giving to mother in-law. I prefer blues and flatheads if Im eating cats. I think I've caught most of my blues on minnow, both alive and dead.
I've been hunting geese a lot the past couples weeks, I might bring some goose liver or heart or other meat chunks to try as bait....

I do agree that Blues are the best for the table. I don't know if I've ever had a flathead.
