  • Excited to be here! First Post!

Hello everyone! I'm new to the site, and I look forward to meeting and fishing with you guys soon.

Right now, I am yak-less, but my new friends at Easton Kayak have been helping me with that, so I plan to have a shiny (bright yellow) OK Trident 13 by the end of the weekend. No idea how I'm going to get it home yet, but that seems like such a secondary problem. I practically have the thing rigged up in my head already. I see some "relationship problems" in the future, because if she thought I spent a lot of time shore fishing ...

I live part time in a little community in Shady Side, and I usually shore fish from a place called Franklin Point which is directly in the Chesapeake bay. I was hoping to just drag (cart) to the community launch and drop in, but that is the main bay, and I have only kayaked in small lakes. I have no idea about paddling to any of the hot spots I have seen people talk about - they seem a bit far. Will I be ok, even close to shore, there while I'm learning, or should I try and figure out car topping and go to one of the rivers in the area first. Suggestions?

Even though it will kill me to wait, I was thinking of waiting for some good deals at the Pasadena Sportfishing flea market next month to gear up the kayak unless you think I'm just as good on-line and with the big stores (Bass Pro & Dick's).

Anyway, look forward to any advice, and I'll see you on the water.

Although I can't give much advice on kayaking seeing as I am relatively new to kayaking as well but I can tell you that the Trident 13 is a very good kayak...is it the 2013 model? I bought mine used at Easton as well for $600 (2012) model. Did they change anything?

22Tango, Welcome to the board. My advice is to target the information that you need to learn. Look on the internet on how to start kayak fishing see what your kayak manufacturer suggest on starting in your type of kayak. Also start narrowing down specific brands of, for example rod holders and then start pricing them through different dealers. Have fun and take your time. I'm more of a loner so I started yakking by myself to learn my strengths and weaknesses. Most of all know your limitations. If you need to stay close to shore then do it you be suprised that someone in the group might stay with you .Hope to see you out there.

I think you'll find plenty to fish for around Shady Side. There are some guys near you who train/teach kayak re-entry....you should hook up with one of them and then....the bay is your playground.

You are in the right spot. Select your fishing day according to the weather, and the bay is like any other body of water. Start out close to shore and work your way out as you gain confidence. Calm is always best. Eventually, you will learn where to go based on the wind and weather. Go to the NOAA web site and select map 12270. You can just work the drop off areas. If not to far you may even be in easy range of the West River area. You should have good bottom fishing and trolling right in your area.

            Good luck.

Welcome. As other have already stated, there is a ton of great info here and great people to help you out. I have the same kayak, although mine is an older model.
You have some great fishing in your area on the West and Rhode rivers. They would be perfect for you to get comfortable in your new yak.

Welcome to the Addiction. I do see a problem if She thinks you send to much time fishing from shore wait until you get in the Yak..[Gut Hooked] You'll be singing Brad Pasley's song [I'm gonna miss her.]

Welcome tango....I am one of the newer members also. Refining your search in the forum will do wonders for any detailed question. Everyone is very helpful and willing to share insider knowledge. I started out in very calm waters and gained a bit of confidence...really anxious myself to hit the bay, but I am fine with baby steps.

No, everything seems the same as last year's model. I've heard good things about it, so that's what ultimately made me go with it.

No, but I have worked the pier pretty good and the white perch seem pretty game. I have done more surf fishing from the rocks and usually get a pretty good mix of perch, croaker, spot, puppy drum, blues & rockfish. The blues and rock are never the size I see in you guys pictures, but i'm hoping the yak gets me a bit closer to them.
