I just like the extra peace of mind especially when traveling far. I've had straps loosen a bit due to vibration.

My brothers rav gets 30 mpg on the highway. We take the suburban when on a major trip. The rav runs and handles well tho and is great on gas!

I cartop my W500 on my old Honda Civic Hybrid too...it gets less mileage w/a kayak on top than without....but still gets gd mileage. I recently bought a Yakima rack that I need to set up on the roof. I may hit you up for advice, Wavy Davy.

I have a W500 also. Cool... I car top mine on a Saturn Vue. The gas mileage suffers quite a bit when its on top.

The Brat is bad-ass. I love those suicide seats in the bed.

For two years I cartopped my kayaks on a 2005 Ford Focus.and I did not have any problems...until my dumb ass step Son who did not know how to drive a stick shift used it for a pizza run and blew the engine- no, he did not have permission...anyway- enter my 2007 Ford Ranger super cab, XLT 4X4 pickup- big 4.0L V-6 OHC engine, 5 speed manual heavy duty tow package= lousy gas mileage....but I have to admit- I love my truck...manlove...lockup everything inside- use a cable lock to lock up my Outback through the drive opening in the hull if I am traveling and keeping the kayak in the truck overnight- easy loading, easy hauling- and this year I have also used it to haul 5600 pounds of mulch (4 loads), fertilizer and garden supplies-

Pickup truck with top on back for storage. Racks hold multipule kayaks at same time. Take friends to save on gas.

I have a 1 ton Chevy van with a DYI shelf system that I store, and transport both a Tarpon 120 and a 12' sit-in Marvel Native Watercraft. I can't imagine a vehicle being more suited for kayak fishing. My kayaks, rods and gear remain safe and secure in the van ready to go at all times.
It doesn't get very good gas mileage but it sure is easy for a 70 year old senior citizen to load and unload.
