Registering your kayak?

Back to the topic at hand. Yes, as others have said, a kayak needs to be registered if you intend to put any type of motor on it, electric or gas powered. However, for the time being, registration in MD for crafts 16' or less is free. But this free registration must be renewed every 2 years. No big deal though, very easy to do.Originally posted by MRewis View PostIve seen some kayaks with some stickers so i was curious about that do i have to register my kayak ?
There's one caveat. Just like when you buy a car, you must first "Title" the kayak and pay a one-time "sales tax" on the value of your kayak. If you bought your kayak from a Maryland dealer than you already paid the sales tax (receipt needed). If you bought from an out-of-state dealer OR from a private party, then you will need to pay the Maryland sales tax in order to apply for the free registration for your kayak.Howard

Hey all. I'm reviving this thread because I just registered mine yesterday.
Much of the surface on my kayak is textured. Does the registration sticker and numbers stick okay on these surfaces? Any tricks?2018 Hobie Outback (seagrass)

Hmmm... the texturing could be a problem. You could buy just one number first and stick it on to see if it stays put.Originally posted by buzz View PostMuch of the surface on my kayak is textured. Does the registration sticker and numbers stick okay on these surfaces? Any tricks?
I bought a stick-on 36" measuring tape from BPS. I tried to make it stick to the textured surface of my friends boat... lasted about 2 hours and fell off. But on a slick surface of his boat it stick great and has lasted 2 years so far.

After more thought, I'd think that you can probably stick the numbers anywhere on top where you have a slick/smooth surface. You might have to do some splaining to do to DNR police, but I'd think it would be no big deal once he sees the situation.
I register my 16' Oldtown canoe because I mount a trolling motor to the side. Most of the time I take it out solo, which means I actually sit backwards in the front seat. The end result is that now the numbers are on the "back" of the canoe. I've been stopped twice for a license check and the DNR Police never mentioned that my numbers were on the "back".
