There's one caveat. Just like when you buy a car, you must first "Title" the kayak and pay a one-time "sales tax" on the value of your kayak. If you bought your kayak from a Maryland dealer than you already paid the sales tax (receipt needed). If you bought from an out-of-state dealer OR from a private party, then you will need to pay the Maryland sales tax in order to apply for the free registration for your kayak.Howard

Hey all. I'm reviving this thread because I just registered mine yesterday.
Much of the surface on my kayak is textured. Does the registration sticker and numbers stick okay on these surfaces? Any tricks?2018 Hobie Outback (seagrass)

I bought a stick-on 36" measuring tape from BPS. I tried to make it stick to the textured surface of my friends boat... lasted about 2 hours and fell off. But on a slick surface of his boat it stick great and has lasted 2 years so far.

After more thought, I'd think that you can probably stick the numbers anywhere on top where you have a slick/smooth surface. You might have to do some splaining to do to DNR police, but I'd think it would be no big deal once he sees the situation.
I register my 16' Oldtown canoe because I mount a trolling motor to the side. Most of the time I take it out solo, which means I actually sit backwards in the front seat. The end result is that now the numbers are on the "back" of the canoe. I've been stopped twice for a license check and the DNR Police never mentioned that my numbers were on the "back".
