  • What are your favorite rod/real combos for kayak fishing?

Last year I paired my Avet 5.3 with a casting rod I'd built out of a 6'-6" bass blank. Absolutely love it for trolling. The reel has power to spare and the rod gives great action to lighter lures like 4-6" Rapalas or soft plastics on a jig head. A 40+" fish would be an epic battle, but most of my fishing is in the river where the biggest fish I've caught was a 26, so it is the perfect setup for me.

Working on building a new ultra light - used to use a BPS microlite. Shimano Sedona 500.

Plan on building a multipurpose spinning rod to go with a new Penn Battle 3000 I picked up over the winter. This could be for trolling, top water, or jigging...which is why I got to wondering what everyone else was using and why.

I have a 7 foot medium light, fast action TFO spinning rod paired with a Penn Battle 2000. I had it spooled with 8lb mono at Bass Pro when I bought it. Caught 2 stripers at 25-26 inches and one just under 30 inches. I found that the rod has fantastic action, and handled those fish quite nicely. Casts great. Excellent sensitivity. It's probably going to be my all around go to set up. I love it.

Nice! How do you like the Battle? It will be my first non-Shimano reel in probably 20 years. Still debating what to spool it with. I really like the Transition Vanish lines for my lighter reels but was thinking 30 lb braid for the battle.

I've also been thinking about a really short butt section for the new spinning rod. I have a SIK so I sit below the rod holders. That makes dealing with the rod a little more of an issue when landing a fish or casting.

I have the same combo and it has been pretty nice. I think mine is a 6', though.

So you really seem to like your bait casters. I'm still trying to master that one...

If i understand your response correctly you seem to be having trouble fishing w a bait caster? I assume you are getting "bird nesting" when casting?...If i am mistaken, please ignore...if i am correct here is some info that may help you; be sure your spool casting tension (magnets) are set to the proper weight of your lure...or if casting into the wind, set to accomodate that. This is not the drag, but the other knob/s on the reel...depends on model. To test if your tension is correct, simply press the casting knob w/o you thumb on the spool, if the lure drops like a rock you dont have enough tension on the spool. You want your lure to sink slowly toward the ground...if you press the casting knob and the lure doesnt fall at all, you have too much tension. Also when casting, thumb the spool (stop it or slow it) just before the lure hits the water or your spool will continue to spin, releasing line. If i am mistaken please expand on your comment "still trying to master" and lets see if we can get you a response that will help. Regards - Wayne

im struggling too with the baitcaster but im definately a lot better than when i started. my sidearm is rough and seems to carry into the trees everytime i try it. i can overhand cast if i turn the reel sideways when i cast. (a little trick the guys at work tought me to prevent backlash) when adjusting the drag i make sure it falls slowly but take my thumb offr the spool the whole time and was told its set properly when it hits and doesnt backlash. dont know if thats right or not but thats how ive been doing it. the lighter the jig lure etc the harder it is to not backlash it seems. trying to make that transition but i seem to always pick up the spinning reel over it. or ill bring both and usually end up using the spinning reel in the end

What kinda bait casters are you guys using? My first was a RevoSX, and I found that reel to be very forgiving to a beginner.

Thanks, Wayne. You are partially correct. I still get the occaisional birds nest, even with the magnets set to "novice" on my Shimano Caenan. The other part of it is that for whatever reason, the whole process of casting, thumbing, and then changing grip to reel just doesn't feel natural to me yet. I'm much better than when I started last year, but I still get frustrated. I've also seen Youtube videos of guys throwing their Avet MC's a mile without thumbing and with zero backlash. Magic Cast or not, I can still get a pretty good birdsnest going.

I currently use a Shimano Caenan. I used to have a Cardiff, but that thing has never seemed right.

I'm 67 years old- grew using Pflueger President series bait casters with braided nylon lines- I can remember when the Garcia Mitchell 300 "french spinning reel" came out and all the problems with line twist and the bails failing to stay open during casts, breaking off your baits/lures- both reels have come a long way since then- in the hands of someone that really knows what they are doing, you can catch much larger, more powerful fish on a conventional spool reel than a spinning reel- just a fact- that said, the big spinning reels are being used to catch Marlin nowadays, so...just ain't my thing-

Medium action Tsunami Airwave paired with a Penn Battle 4000. This was a new purchase over the winter and have used it a few times this year and this is my favorite rod EVER. This winter I have converted to all Penn reels for the yak besides my UL rods for perch
