Last year I paired my Avet 5.3 with a casting rod I'd built out of a 6'-6" bass blank. Absolutely love it for trolling. The reel has power to spare and the rod gives great action to lighter lures like 4-6" Rapalas or soft plastics on a jig head. A 40+" fish would be an epic battle, but most of my fishing is in the river where the biggest fish I've caught was a 26, so it is the perfect setup for me.
Working on building a new ultra light - used to use a BPS microlite. Shimano Sedona 500.
Plan on building a multipurpose spinning rod to go with a new Penn Battle 3000 I picked up over the winter. This could be for trolling, top water, or jigging...which is why I got to wondering what everyone else was using and why.
