When I fish Pohick Bay we'll sometimes find our way over to Accotink Creek. It gets kinda narrow. There was one on the bank just staring at us menacingly. If he wanted to, he coulda been after one of us very quickly.

Seen/heard that tail slap plenty of times. I stay clear. After a couple trips to Pohick this year there seems to be more of them around than anytime I can remember.

Yep, natural selection at work. I don't mind much out there on the water. Snakes do their thing, I do mine. Spiders, whatever. Even the menacing looking snapping turtle doesn't bother me much. I'll never bother him. But the beaver, that's a different critter. Territorial, has a chainsaw in his mouth, and swims twice as fast as I can paddle, ten times faster than I can swim. I see their big cueball sized eyeball glaring at me, and I get the shivers down my spine. There was one up on the Susquehanna several years back that a few of the local guides referred to as beaverzilla. This thing must have weighed 80 lbs. I steer clear of them.

I always carry an aluminum angler bat. I've seen them plenty of times and usually they stay away, or swim away. If they ever come close to my yak, I'll bat the shit out of them. I just hope it never come to that.
