So back to the original post.... Was the lost rod in a holder while you had your lure dangling in the the water or just lying on the kayak?

Can't see how it would get pulled out of a rod holder by a schoolie bass. If you just had it lying on the kayak, then you should have had it secured someway, even if it was just putting a leg over it. And why the need to fish two rods with lures when fishing are breaking? Just toss one at them and stow the second away.

I too find leashes annoying and cumbersome, but the rods get secured down while not in use, surf launching/landing, or paddling between spots. Usually when I'm moving around I just toss the rod I'm using between my legs and secure the rod butt under my thigh. *knock on wood* only gear I've lost is a pair on sunglasses, pliers, and knife during a crash and burn session on a miss timed surf landing. ...anybody that finds a pair of Oakley's on the surf side of the OC South jetty, I want them back!

I think I will intentionally dangle a gulp minnow 2 feet from the kayak from now on. I caught a fish that way this weekend too after trying every lure I had. I did have it under my leg while I worked on the other rod though so I didn't lose it.

Had a schoolie do the same thing to me this year, yanked the rod right out. I was only fishing that rod and placed it in the holder after landing a 20 something inch bass. The lure was only about 3 feet in the water. If anyone finds a mh carrot stick with a 201e curado being towed by a bass let me know.

I witnessed the incident. Funny thing was the number of oyster shells and croaker i snagged while trying to catch the rod on the bottom..

I always leash everything unless i am holding the rod or paddle. As soon as it gets set down i leash it up. I really like the ACK leashes with the breakaway snaps..

Knock on wood i have not lost any rods in a while.

Did loose an anchor recently though.. always check your knots lol...

When I first started kayak fishing this year, I leashed everything. I even leashed my leashes! Now, I don't use any....they became another obstacle to work around. I know it's not a smart idea, but I have been very careful to keep them in deep rod holders. Other than my trevela...all my rods are under $40. I do splurge on my reels though.

A few months back at the Wilson Bridge I lost a rod right at the first pliling and 3 weeks later snagged it and have been using it since. It took a little cleaning and soaking to get the river smell out of the braided line but that was it.

Now, just last Saturday afternoon at the Wilson I had a large fish most likely a Blue catfish bump my line and as I took it in my hand I got 2 more bumpes. Then as fast as it could have happened it slammed the hook and snatched the rod right out of my hand. All I could do was laugh and think I just got caught sleepin by a fish.

Luckily it was a yard sale deal I got for $10.00 but it was worth about $70.00 time to go yard saling again with the wife.

I literally read this thread at work today and thought to my self how mad I would be if this were to happen to me. God forbid I set out on the severn today around 430. Everything went swimmingly great day no hiccups, just smooth sailing. I had my cut bait rod in the back soaking as I was casting out a chartreuse curltail on the pilings of a pier. I hook up on the grub and start reeling. Next thing you know wham something slams my shrimp line as I reach back for it was too late. My favorite setup is now gone. So I sat back and thought of course the day I read that thread and contemplate leashing all my rods I lose one. But long story short still took home an 18 inch chain pickeral and a few good size whiteys. Off to anglers tomorrow

I've used parachute cord since day 1 on the yak. Don't really mind it and can't say I ever lost a fish because of it. Find 3-4' works and tie it to a carabiner connected to my milk crate behind me. Cord lays in your lap or on side of the yak as you cast and work the lure. Got used to it real quick as I don't like to lose tackle.

Leashes are a double bladed sword- something to get tangled in if you turtle your kayak, something to secure your rods and paddle if you turtle your kayak- I have used them and then again I mostly don't routinely use them- they get in my way and the other issue is where do you secure them to the kayak- so far, so good- no lost rods- I see a lot of rods with extra flotation so they float in case you drop one- that idea appeals to me, but so far I don't have any extra floatation, either. Maybe that makes me a compulsive gambler...

I have lost two loomis rods with shimano reels.... now i have rod floats on all of my rods and it is worth every cent and minor inconvenience to have the assurance of not losing another rod and reel, and I know it works....

No need to invest too much. I saw this idea (but with cell phone chargers) online and opted to make mine. I bought $0.98 carabiners from home depot as well as snap hooks (the things on the end of a dog leash). I found a lot of 25 old cell phone chargers on ebay for $4.50. That, some zip ties and heat shrink and I was all set. They turned out pretty good. I don't if a rod is in the rod holder I'll leash it. if it is in my lap and I'm fishing with it...well then, not so much. I'm thinking about atttaching some doublesided velcro to one end and a clip to the other so I can just wrap it around the butt of the rod....

Those are the leashes i use for my rods. It is nice because i can tie them right into my rod holders.
