Wanted to bump this to the top. I know I don't post here a lot, growing up near the Jersey Shore, I tend to spend a ton of time driving back north to fish "home" waters.

That said, there is probably gonna be a bit of a gathering end of March, beginning of April for an entire weekend of fishing the Flats. Looks like Elk Neck State Park may end up being base camp. I will start a separate thread as more info becomes available.

I'm planning on hitting the flats this weekend because I cannot join in on the fun for next weekend. The 9th was originally the scheduled time to hit the flats so if anyone has this weekend open please feel free to come hit the flats with me.

I'm not sure about when and where I'll be launching, but I'll post as soon as I do. It will be my first time fishing the flats so if anyone wants to step up and offer some advice, I'm all ears.

Tony Acceta spoons. All sizes, but 14 works best.

How long is a size 14? Are they much different than a kroc, kastmaster, or hopkins? My plan was shallow diving plugs, jerkbaits, swamp munkeys, bass assains, tube and worm, and some hogys or bkds... Guess I'll put metal on the list now...

Sizes are written on the underside of the spoon. Did very well with the gold colored spoons last year.

michael, the acetta pet spoons are like penis shaped bunkerspoons. ive talked to some guys this weekend who said people were wacking huge fish around lapidum which is way up river from the flats on magnum rapala xraps. if you find the fish you can catch them on all of the stuff you mentioned i'd assume. Im bringing ba's, bkds, a variety of depthed cranks, a daisy chain w/ like a 1-2oz bucktail or chute, maybe some t & w's although i dont have the rudder thing for them can u just use a trolling weight to get them down?, for topwater i understand that stillwater smack its in blackback/white/silver, and clown colors is the go to. fly choice will be similiar with chart/white chart/green, black/white half and halfs.

if the weathers decent 'kid and another buddy and i will most likely be up there saturday. gotta figure out if we'll fish the river out of susquehanna state park (lapidum) or the flats and launch from tydings.

Wacking huge fish with penis shaped spoons ? ............ Dude, you got me concerned !!!!!!!!~

Capt Benjamin fishes the deep water between the bridges and Lapidum on his charters ......... last few years they've done well up there .........

Yes, you can fish Tony's without a rudder ......... used to do it all of the time decades ago .......... best to use a 3 way swivel with a drop weight and a long leader to the spoon w/2 or 3 ball bearing swivels ....... even used them w/inline weights

Capt Ben and others also cast tony's on the flats ........... I think that a 19 Tony would be better ....... closer to the size of the herring @ 5-6 inches .......... We used to troll the 21's years ago for big rock and blues ....... I think they are 8-9 inches

                          http://www.captharry.com/product/Plu...lugs,/337.html

Per Tidalfish, Water temps were in the low 40's ......... I think they usually turn on on the flats when the water temps start to rise quickly to around 50 (if I remember correctly) which could be this week if the wind and the 80 temps continue .......... problem is the water temps up in PA and the amount of water running thru the dam ........ If the flow is low to medium then the water should be fairly clear and moving slow enough to warm a little .......... Eastern Flats should be better ........

Key right now is to watch the temps .......... just like the CBBT ...... above 50 is usually the key ........

You always have to go there rick..... I meant the rudder for the tube and worms not the spoons. but yeah we caught a bunch of fish last year casting them, might try pulling one around though.

You're words not mine ......... sorry guy but I've used those spoons for longer than you're been alive and NEVER realized they were a phallic symbol till you pointed it out ........

You don't need a rudder for the tubes either ......... same rigging for either the spoons or the tubes ......... 3 way swivel w/drop weight and or plenty of ball bearing swivels w/a rudder or an inline ........

I think a tony would be better this time of year though ........ hoses were mainly a summer lure before .........

It's a little different for us non yacht kayak guys, a 3 way drop can be a mess. I rig up some egg sinkers of different weights on short mono leaders that I connect to my main line swivel and the swivel to the leader on my tube. More terminal tackle but easy to change. Trolling sinkers would work fine too but unless you're trying to get way down deep it's not really necessary bc braid cuts through the drag a lot already. 3 way rigs and long leaders make landing fish much more difficult. I use a 3 or 4 ft leader, granted I'm not the most successful tube and worm guy out there. Make sure you use decent swivels though, they can cause a lot of line twist.

I'm going to troll one this weekend, but I think they work much better for the northern fish that live in areas where sandworms are prevalent. Maybe with more of us trying them down here we'll figure that out!
