  • Clarks Landing (Cuckold Creek) 10-21-14

I put the kayak in at first Light. The weather was saying that the barometer was on a short rise before the approaching low coming that evening. Overcast skies and No wind was going to be perfect for finding feeding fish.
Once the sun came up It was on. There were Striped bass and birds feeding all scattered over the creek. At first I was so excited that I would try to run from blitz to blitz, but blitzes were so small and scattered the fish were gone before I got there. So I had to calm myself down and act like Ive been there done that type of thinking. I sat back and watched the pattern of feeding fish and realized that no matter were you were located in the creek the fish were pushing the bait up from 10ft of water to around 3-5ft flats. If you know the creek and know were the flats are you would see fish feeding along the flats. No blitzes were in deep water. So I just sat in one spot and waited for the blitzes to form around me as you will see in the video.
I must apologize for the poor production quality of the video. I didn't check my camera settings(which I usually do ) and could not use a lot of the footage which showed some great strikes. But on a lighter note the first fish I caught had a strong will to survive, as you will see.
I try to show my lures and techniques and I hope you guys get something from this and not just a guy catching a bunch of fish. Oh By the way most of the fish were 18 inches or better. It was like they were carbon copied or I was catching the same fish.

Looks like you had a good day! Was that the only blue you got?

I was going to criticize you for putting your fingers in that first fish's gills, until I saw that you were planning to keep it...ooops. LOL

I would suggest using a fish gripper so you can unhook them without hurting them (taking slime off or gills) or you (cut from gill plates or impaled by fins)...works good for blues too, so you can avoid getting perforated by their chompers.

Yes that was the only blue. On the mishandling of the fish, yes I have to admit that I have to be more conscious of the proper way to handle releasble fish responsibly. The bad thing is I have a fish grip on board. That bad habit stems from lipping a fish and getting hooked badly.

Yeah, I worry about getting hooked when I lip fish too, that's where the fish grip comes in. Some blues won't open their mouth for me, so I have a wet rag I wrap around them to get a good grip without needing to squeeze them too much. I have used the wet rag on small rockfish too when the fish gripper would get in the way of taking the hook out.

I can see you are catching them in the same spot we've been killing them. Monday was different, no birds feeding and I had to search the fish out. Nice touch with the lures, we've been using different lures and glad to see other options on the table.
