  • Patuxent River/Cuckhold 6/11

Fished out of Clark's landing this morning and had a fairly good day. Launched at 5:45 and headed out into the Patuxent. By 6 I was hooked up with the first of a half dozen small rockfish (8-14") that I caught trolling my Z-Man in 5' of water. I wanted bigger fish so I headed back into Cuckhold. Picked up another small rock near the piers and headed deeper into the creek. I switched over to a Yamamoto crank bait that had worked for me in the past as I wanted to try deeper water. About a minute after I switched I had a nice 18" rock in the boat and another pass through the area gave me his brother. I trolled through that spot at least a half dozen more times with no more bites. In fact they were my last bites of the day as it seemed like a switch turned them off as I had no bites for almost an hour. Came off the water a little after 9.

I did have an interesting encounter with a CNR. I saw it gliding towards me just below the surface but I don't think it saw me. At the last instance it saw the boat and did a 180 that splashed water in the kayak and lifted it slightly from the pressure wave (no small feat in a PA). Thankfully I had seen it, not sure what I would have done if this was a surprise attack. Sorry no photos today - I accidentally left my camera on all day yesterday and there was no battery juice left.

Great report. Funny I had a CNR do one of those maneuvers with me yesterday as well.

When are you heading back out to Clarks Landing? I am a"rookie" and would like to fish with someone who knows that area. Thanks

Went out again today - ramp was crowded with the trot liners launching early. Tide was moving very slow today and the fishing reflected it. Did manage this one nice fish on the Yamamoto crank bait and a couple of small fish on the 5" Z-man paddletail. Only problem with it today was the grass, which I was having to peel off every couple of minutes. Frustrating to say the least.
