  • Smallmouths in low clear water....

My brother in law came down from Pa to give kayak fishing a try. Despite the dam not generating any water I figured the river would be a better bet for a first timer so we launched Saturday morning in low, gin clear water. No activity on the river. No birds, no current, no baitfish to be seen. I threw topwater and the smallies cooperated. They were in the typical spots that included structure and any type of flow around a rock or point. I was hoping the stripers would make an appearance but besides a dink we settled for smallies. I love topwater and now my brother in law is going home and ordering a Slayer 10. I suppose he is hooked.

I will probably get out Friday evening and Sunday if you would like to meet up. Hopefully they will be pumping some water soon.

Uggh. I would love to, but committed to a long golfing weekend. Where do you usually put in?

Hmm. I may have to look into that. I HATE the Deer Creek launch. The mill is slightly better, but I like fishing N of deer creek.

I was out Sunday and caught a couple by the old Bridge pilings. The pattern I had success with during the summer was ineffective. I found all the fish near grass beds. The wind blew me against a grass bed and with the clear water I saw tons of life in and around the grass bed. I saw a bunch of bait, bluegill, some smallmouth, a few nice catfish, and a school of huge carp swimming right under my kayak. I caught a nice chunky 15 in smallie on a crankbait. I've never caught one that heavy and with that color pattern before. They're typically 12-14in, skinny, without the vertical stripes.
