  • Fun on the Severn

Mark, John Rentch, and I launched in Weems Creek about 8:00 am. The wind was supposed to be strong from the east, but never built to a strong point. We had high water level and overcast skies all morning.

We did a combination of trolling for stripers and casting for perch. I found a few perch in four different Severn tidal creeks. At one spot, I caught a 5" striper on the first cast, and a 5" perch a minute later in the same location. I had to laugh about these diminutive representatives of their species.

Over 3.5 hours of fishing, I ended with 25 perch, 3 small stripers (2 by casting and 1 on the troll), and my first Severn channel catfish in a decade. The cat was 23" long and fought aggressively on my ultralight rod. It hit the lure just two feet off a row of riprap in shallow water. The catfish did some serious bending of the Bignose lure that it bit. I bent it back into shape and caught more perch.

Mark and John each caught stripers and perch. Mark had the largest stripers today -- he can report on his catches.

The Bignose spinner caught all the perch, the catfish, and two of the stripers today. The third striper hit a 3" paddletail in gold "Bling" color.

We rewarded ourselves for the good outing by enjoying the Chinese buffet at the nearby Canton restaurant.

Sure you don’t do this trip just for the buffet?

I agree, this Canton Restaurant feels like it deserves its own Meet-N-Greet!!!

Even after 3 hours of paddling, it is a net caloric gain on buffet days. Plus the friendly waitress always brings us extra almond cookies at the end.

The restaurant is only a few blocks from the Tucker St launch and not too far from Jonas Green. Earlier this year they raised the price for all-you-can-eat lunch buffet from $6.50 to $7.00 -- still a marvelous bargain. Soup is included, and the waitress always remembers which type of soup we like. She is very attentive and keeps our water glasses filled.

            That spinner jig isn't bent.
It has just developed a little "character."

Twist it back, check to see if it runs straight, resume fishing.

That's a big part of it for sure! I love Chinese Buffets and this one is very special because of the food, the hospitality of the hostess, and the fishing we do before it.

But today was extra nice for me because I've been consumed with an intense family obligation for over a week. (Those of you who think when you're retired you will have all the time in the world to fish are mistaken.)

Further, today I brought a 30 year-old Lamiglas spinning rod out of retirement as a third perch rod. I tied one of my perch spinners on it. I make two styles of perch spinners, both are 1/8 oz. But one has a heavier gauge hook on it, as discussed in a recent thread here. I has hoping for one of those Severn catfish that everyone has been catching. I wanted to be ready.

I got off to a slow start with nary a bite for two hours. Then the fishing gods turned their attention to me. I started hooking perch, nice ones too: Here are a couple:

              P1030618.jpg P1030620.jpg

I got 11 in fairly short order and only a few were under 9 inches.

But then I thought I had a catfish. It was a heavy hit but it was running too fast for a catfish. In fact, it pulled me toward a dock. Kudos to Hobie for making the Mirage Drive go in reverse. My catfish turned out to be a 21 inch striper:

              P1030615.jpg

A little later I got another:

              P1030619.jpg

Both were tight to shore swimming with perch, as we've often discussed here. And both hit the same white and tan perch spinner. Also, as I've said here before, I've yet to find a color that will not work.

I got those stripers back into the water fast.

So, it was great to be back on the water with two good friends. it was fun to revive an old fishing rod. The fishing was pretty good and lunch at the Canton as always was excellent.
