Baitball, Big Mike and I hit the launch at daylight, dead low tide...as the sun was coming up the tide began to move and so did the fish...great day on the water...lots of fish...3-5 pound Bluefish on top water poppers wore me OUT...finally got a couple of Stripers on top water a nice fat 19 1/4 that I released and a really fat 22”...the blues would not leave me alone so I decided to leave them...Mike and Manny were scoring on speckled trout so I headed over to them...Manny was nailing 13-14 inch flounder on one small hole that did not have enough room for two of us, so I decided to troll a pearl/chart Bass Assassin on a 1/4 oz jighead..started picking up undersized speckled trout...added a chartreuse Bass Assassin on a 3/8 jighead and started picking up larger Specks...got thirty or more Specks today, several 16 inch Specks...the tide started to slow a bit and Big Mike and I decided to try for flounder...we both caught several- Mike’s Biggest was a 16” fish and my biggest was a 16 1/4”...everyone caught plenty of fish today, but I’ll let them chime in on their post.

I find the flounder fishing a therapeutic change from striper and perch fishing. The bite right now is feather light and you have to completely focus or you miss the fish. Using my light rig with 8lb test makes the fight very enjoyable. Much like I’m in search of a 30” striper I now find myself looking to break 20” for a bay flounder.

I tried for flounder today as well, sadly they seem to have disappeared from my usual spot.

Fun day under very light winds and full sun - it seemed like a summer day.

Thanks to Mike and Ron for (once again) putting me on the fish.

The flounder hole I happened across was small, no more than 5sq yards, but you couldn’t drop a jig in there and not get bit.
All the flounder were small, 10in or so, and I had many come off the hook just as I was lifting them over the gunnels. I guess I’ll have to invest in a net for next time :-)

Lots of bait in the area leaves me feeling very confident in a strong striper bite in the coming days and weeks. Hopefully Hurricane Michael won’t put too much of a damper on things.

Here is one that I managed to land

              Manny,

              That's one ambitious flounder.

                Mark,

They were stacked on top of each other in that small hole. I must’ve caught about a dozen just like that one.
