I launched my paddle kayak from Weems Creek at 7:45 and spent the next 4 hours paddling, trolling, and casting for fish in the Severn and several tributaries. The river was calm until about 10:00, after which all manner of boats rode up and down the river throwing wakes. The water was clean but there were patches of floating grass and other natural debris (probably from the storms the past few days).
To summarize the morning, I caught 5 perch and 5 tiny stripers in 4 hours of fishing. I trolled a long way today through areas that in previous years would have produced at least a few stripers in the mid to upper teens. Today I had no bites at all on the trolled lures.
From the launch point to the mouth of Weems, I caught one perch and four 5" - 10" stripers in my traditional perch spots. It is interesting that I have caught more little stripers in Weems this spring than perch. One of the larger ones is shown below.

After reaching the river, I trolled all the way up to the lower end of Round Bay and back. I trolled two lines with paddletails and a third line with a Yozuri plug (later switched to a Rat'L'Trap). None of these lures was touched all morning.
I stopped in four other creeks/tidal ponds to cast my Bignose spinnerbait for perch. I caught one perch in the second creek and three perch in the third creek. I had no bites in the first and fourth creeks. In some cases SAVs were growing so thick that I could not work my spinnerbait through the water. Those areas are mostly unfishable for the next few weeks until those SAVs die off.

The Severn remains a beautiful river with lots of scenic views and plenty of wildlife (in addition to the usual birds, I saw two swimming snakes, two snapping turtles, and a pair of geese herding a few goslings this morning). Fishing in the Severn has been off for more than a year. I keep waiting for things to turn around -- they have not turned yet.
