  • Severn remains tough for catching

I launched my paddle kayak from Weems Creek at 7:45 and spent the next 4 hours paddling, trolling, and casting for fish in the Severn and several tributaries. The river was calm until about 10:00, after which all manner of boats rode up and down the river throwing wakes. The water was clean but there were patches of floating grass and other natural debris (probably from the storms the past few days).

To summarize the morning, I caught 5 perch and 5 tiny stripers in 4 hours of fishing. I trolled a long way today through areas that in previous years would have produced at least a few stripers in the mid to upper teens. Today I had no bites at all on the trolled lures.

From the launch point to the mouth of Weems, I caught one perch and four 5" - 10" stripers in my traditional perch spots. It is interesting that I have caught more little stripers in Weems this spring than perch. One of the larger ones is shown below.

After reaching the river, I trolled all the way up to the lower end of Round Bay and back. I trolled two lines with paddletails and a third line with a Yozuri plug (later switched to a Rat'L'Trap). None of these lures was touched all morning.

I stopped in four other creeks/tidal ponds to cast my Bignose spinnerbait for perch. I caught one perch in the second creek and three perch in the third creek. I had no bites in the first and fourth creeks. In some cases SAVs were growing so thick that I could not work my spinnerbait through the water. Those areas are mostly unfishable for the next few weeks until those SAVs die off.

The Severn remains a beautiful river with lots of scenic views and plenty of wildlife (in addition to the usual birds, I saw two swimming snakes, two snapping turtles, and a pair of geese herding a few goslings this morning). Fishing in the Severn has been off for more than a year. I keep waiting for things to turn around -- they have not turned yet.

Maybe we were too good at our craft in the past and we're seeing the dividends now...

I hear you John...I pulled a four hour marathon today in the St Mary’s River all the way up to Tippity Wacithy Island..about a dozen school Stripers (nothing over 17 inches), 2 big Cow Nose Rays and one nice keeper speckled Trout that self released when I was lifting it into the cockpit. The screen of my Lowrance Hook 2-7 TS showed fish, but I suspect they are catfish and lots of them..the rarity of white perch goes hand in glove with the explosion of blue catfish...perhaps we should follow Kevin Fry’s example and all take kids catfishing to thin down the massive schools of catfish...I have never seen anything like it..

Ron - You had a decent amount of pullage today. Maybe not what you hoped for, but not so bad.

I also launched out of weems at about 10am. Trolled a Xrap sxr-10 which yielded no bites from weems down to naval academy wall. Marked fish on the 450 bridge pilings and tried jogging some paddle tails but no bites. Went back up to weeks and threw a perch pounder around on my way in and caught 2 small white perch and had some other bites but no hook ups. By noon the main river had too much boat traffic to fish without wakes being thrown at you non stop.

I fished the Severn between the bridges on Monday morning and did pretty well. Approximately 25 perch and ~8 perch-sized rock. They weren't hitting the spinner very well and I was mostly getting them by jigging a tandem rig (1/8 oz. on the bottom and 1/16 oz. above) in 8-12 ft at the end of docks. I think the shallow spinner bite should pick up with the increasing water temp.

I'm glad to hear a positive Severn report. I hope you are correct about the perch moving soon.

I went out on the Severn on Memorial Day in search of bigger perch and found nothing. I fished for about 45 minutes and if I didn't get bites in the spots I was in, I wasn't going to get any bites. Moved into Spa Creek and found some action in the back coves. Biggest perch was about 10 inches (barely a keeper size for me) and I also pulled in a small pickerel, which was a surprise. Best part of the trip was the redhead sunbathing in a thong bikini.

                    Thanks for the report, John.

I fished early Saturday morning, in 3 miles of trolling I caught one fish, probably a 17 inch striper. No perch in the creeks. That evening I caught 4 perch casting from shore to my mooring buoy, that is always a sweet spot for summertime perch.

A couple weeks ago, I fished the Severn also, on a Friday evening and Saturday morning. Here is a short video compilation of half the fish I caught. In addition to those on video, I caught 3 more similar in size to the first one. Excuse my commentary as these were the first kayak fish of the year for me and I was quite excited. Also, video quality is poor due to the free version of the editor I used.

                      Carson,

Your 10 tidal fish (if my count is correct) on your report are 10 more tidal fish than I have caught this year. And I have tried tidal 4 outings. In fact, this morning I was on a boat, not a kayak and I still struck out. I warned the guys before we left that I was a "Tidal Jonah" thus far in 2019. They took me anyway. Now they're sorry.

                      Congratulations on your catches.

I'll try to not fish in your vicinity of the Severn so that your good fortune continues.
