  • A Team Plan

I went out this morning with a plan, try for stripers early and then shift to flounder. In the words of Hannibal Smith, “I love it when a plan comes together “. I got to the fishing grounds just as light was making an appearance and saw the first splash of a working fish. For the next 45 minutes it was top water heaven, around 12-15 fish with 4 over 20” and smallest around 16” and I got a decent 14” or so bluefish on top as well. As the sun got just a tad high the big boys fled and smaller 12-14” fish moved in. As B. A. Baracus said, “l pity the fool who slept in”.

I migrated over to the flounder hole and my first fish was another bluefish while bottom bouncing Gulp. After that the flounder bite picked up and I ended up with a bakers dozen with 6 over 14”and a big at 15 1/4”. Keepers are in there, they have to be.

One of the flounder gave me his breakfast. Clearly they aren’t afraid to eat bigger food. I stupidly threw this overboard instead of putting it on a hook..

When things slowed I’d go back to the striper area and picked up plenty of 12-14” fish with occasional 18” cruising around. In my last pass in the flounder hole I picked up this 16” surprise.

All in all a really good morning. My toe thermometer told me the water temp had cooled a couple degrees as I no longer use electronics. If you’ve fished with me you can guess where I was, it’s the only spot I won’t mention as it’s small and can’t handle an armada of boats invading, or I can’t handle an armada invading. Rocktober coming.

Very nice report Mike. I can picture you enjoying a cigar as you pedal in wearing your Godzilla suit. This report inspires me, but I just got back from a wedding. Not sure how motivated I can get in the next five hours. I may try tomorrow evening though. Congrats on the Lower Slower hat trick.

How about this morning being Plan A++. Started off with a Spanish Mackerel.

Ron showed up and we found a big school of very high quality speckled trout. He quickly limited out. I was catching, just not keeping at that point with the Mac in the cooler.

We found ourselves lamenting that the rockfish, up to 20” , were taking away time from trying to catch other species. First world problems we know. Decided to head to flounder hole. I kept what looked like a baby Spanish the Mack had regurgitated for me to tip my Gulp with

Glad I did as my second flounder was a legal 16.5”

Looking forward to the mixed grill.

Gary didn’t join us this morning, bet that doesn’t happen again.

You know it was a good day when you are complaining about catching Stripers. Mike and I were strictly C&R Stripers regardless- and we caught several that were more than the minimum legal 19 inch...had a five species mixed bag this morning...caught a needlefish on top water, started the morning off with a white perch, several Bluefish, bunch of Stripers, and eight 16-18 inch Speckled Trout...then flounder fishing before headed home to watch the kickoff of the 100th NFL season...great morning...

We are very fortunate to have such a diversified fishery in St Mary’s. It’s a luxury to be able to target different species and have reasonable expectations to catch them. As the only SMOG guy who actually lives here I have all the respect in the world for Ron and Gary who do the drive, usually without hesitation. Because for everyone of these trips we highlight there’s a clunker hiding in the weeds.

Thanks for the report, sounds like a great day! My wife and I fished the Pax on Saturday and found plenty of stripers plus my first Chesapeake Spanish Mackerel.

I have had great success with blue silver Zara Spook Jr with the trebles replaced with Owner in line Replacement hooks...and in rough chop the red white skitter pop Rapala...

Easily over 100 top water fish in last 2 weeks on this for me. When they’re in the mood I don’t think it matters what you throw.

Add weakfish and pigfish to the list of species caught in those waters recently.
