  • Severn river lately?

Its been a very long time since I have hit the severn. I moved from annapolis to frederick a little over 2 years ago and now have a little boy, so fishing has been very limited. Anyways I just got a brand new predator pdl today and figured what better better place to take it on its maiden voyage then the river that I loved fishing the most. I plan on heading there at some point later this week. Anyone fished it lately with success?. I had some of my best days of fishing there and hoping it will be worth the 1 hour commute. Thanks for any reports!, oh and here is a pic of my new setup!

I haven’t fished there in about three weeks. The last time I was there the water was very stained and the river was experiencing what I believe they called a Mahogany Tide when I saw how stained the water was I immediately knew it wasn’t going to be a good day. I am not sure if it has cleared up, maybe someone can give updated information. I believe Anglers Fishing Report last week talked about people catching fish at the mouth of the Severn. I also have have had some of my best fishing days on the Scenic Severn river but the last couple of years have been a TOUGH bite.

Thanks for the update, I was out on a buddies boat close to the Severn and noticed how stained the water was, we mainly fished the bay bridge. Had one 19" fish in tow different outings. We fished all day both days and the bite was non-existent.

Yeah, hopefully someone will provide an update. Any info on the Monacacy? Always wanted to fish there. Like the setup btw.

I have never actually fished the monocacy, its shallow from what I hear so the PDL drive is out of the question there. I hear its good for small mouth. The closest to me I have fished since moving up near Frederick, is Little Seneca Lake, which is supposed to be a trophy bass lake. I got skunked when I fished it. I was thinking about going back there later this week and trying my hand at it again. I have off a few days this week, so I want to take advantage of those days.

I fished last Thurs and Fri in Severn tidal creeks. The water quality and clarity is decent now, except for muddy water in the upper reaches the day after a rainstorm. Perch are pretty easy to find if you look for shaded areas near the shoreline. If you don't get bites quickly, move around or use a smaller lure (I fish primarily Bignose spinners -- small spinnerbaits, or the equivalent). To my surprise, I caught three large pickerel (20", 20", 24") on the Thurs trip in about 20 mins. Considering that I have found very few large pickerel anywhere in the Severn over the past three years, it was very pleasing to catch three of them in a short time in the same creek. I found one smaller pickerel on the Fri trip too. In a "normal" year, I catch very few pickerel during the warm months. They become far more prevalent by late Sept and through the winter.

Over the previous few weeks, as the mahogany tide gradually moved out, I caught perch in 8 different Severn creeks and tidal ponds. A few spots had very thick SAV growth that made retrieving a lure difficult.

I have tried trolling paddletails and crankbaits when moving between creeks and have had minimal success.

Thank you for that detailed report, I was really hoping to hear that people were getting on rockfish in the area recently, as I mostly trolled paddletails with great success. I would launch at Jonas Green and tend to have success heading towards Rt. 50 bridge instead of the mouth. Sounds like I may have to fish for other species if I make the drive. Either way I cant wat to get the new predator on the water!.

You can catch stripers by trolling out of many of the Queen Anne's County launch ramps. I have caught them from Goodhands Creek, Cabin Creek, Centreville, and Jackson Creek during the past month. They should be near the other ones too.

I was out on friday near the mouth of the Severn and caught several large channel cats, Striper up to 19.5", and Perch up to 11", some nice crabs too. I caught the fish on gulp and peeler crab

I fished the west side of the Severn near the Rt 450 bridge this past Thursday. If you're looking for perch, you'll have lots of fun. Stopped counting after 50, most 6"-9" but had several 11". Caught a perch on 9 consecutive casts. Called it quits after a 32"+ channel cat destroyed my favorite bignose spinner. Trolled some paddletails but no hits. Water clarity and SAV were not an issue.

I’ve had similar experiences to the posts above. Perch are plentiful, but I haven’t caught much in the way of stripers aside from a few shorts. There’s always the occasional 5lb channel cat, but I really don’t target stripers in the Severn anymore outside of September and October.

i launched out of jonas green last weekend, had a great time 50-60 perch, a few channel cats, one 12" rockfish (wasn't targeting them)

I took a little time to fish one of the Severn tributaries today.
The water was slightly stained with 18-24' of visibility. Usual summer conditions. The water seemed healthy, with baitfish ranging from 1/2" fry up to small pods of peanut bunker milling around.
Low tide when I started, with an incoming current during my fishing day.

In 2 hours I caught about 20 perch, none bigger than 7" on my usual spinner jig. Enough to keep my ADD from kicking in.
There was no discernible pattern, some on rip rap, some under docks, one or two near transitions from bulkheads to fallen wood.
                            The perch were scattered.
No rock, no snakeheads, no pickerel.

I ran into Stu on the water and back at the launch yesterday. He amazed me by lifting his large canoe over his head to carry it up from the water to his car. Not bad for an old guy.

I fished in two different Severn creeks yesterday. Perch remain easy to find if you look for shady spots with a bit of structure. Bignose spinners are hard to beat for perch. For my third Severn trip in a row, I caught large pickerel. Yesterday's fish was 20.5". I rarely find pickerel during the summer in those waters. This has been a pleasant surprise. My best lure for the pickerel has been a 3" Fat Sam mullet paddletail on a 3/16-oz jighead worked slowly along the bottom. Perch peck at it but rarely get the hook in their mouth.
