Hit up KN with the crew last night. It was myself, Mytmouse, & Foursteps24. We launched at night around 8pm or so. It was a nice night out there, but as expected, the current flow was in full effect. It was interesting, never having paddled in water like this. It made for a challenge at times.

We set up near the drawbridge section to cast our artificials. We were across the channel from a boat that was doing fairly well catching stripers. Our luck wasn't as good. At one point, one of the guys offered us some of their hot lures. It was nothing special, just a 2" storm swim shad. I eventually hooked into a striper, but I lost him right at the side of the boat. Estimated size was mid-high teens. Not quie sure if it was a keeper.

The guys on the boat were in the hot spot. We watched one of the guys haul in a 32 incher. He thought he was caught on my line lol. As the evening progressed, the nice guys on the boat invited me to come fish with them. I tied off on their boat, which shielded me from the current. As I was there, I saw mytmouse bowed up with a nice fish. Unfortunately the fish broke him off before he could get him to the yak. They offered me water, sandwiches, donuts lol...Really nice group of guys. Unfortunately, I couldn't replicate their results. After while I thanked them for their hospitality and went back where I was.

Foursteps had the only keeper of the night. As he mentioned calling it quits, he hooked into a nice 18" striper. That was our only keeper amongst us.

It was a good night out there regardless. That current flow is something else!

Glad you all made it out for a night trip. Where did you guys launch from? I've never fished KN, but it is on my list. Atleast you guys saw some fish caught and had somewhat fishy results. Great to hear the boaters and yakkers getting along, lol. Thanks for sharing!

We launched right at the ramp next to the rt 50 bridge. We parked our cars in the commuter lot directly under the highway (the boat ramp lot requires a permit).

Nice report, Metro. It's cool when a bunch of folks fishing an area can get along. It makes for a more fun experience--kinda like going to a concert. Too bad the fish weren't more cooperative. Did MYT's fish hang him up on something or did it just break the line outright? I was curious if there were a lot of snags in that area.

It was a great night out but the current is much stronger near the bridge for some reason. The current was frustrating at times and as MetroMan mention I was about to take it in as I had no strikes all night. I tucked behind a part of the drawbridge that allowed you to not drift at all for the most part. casted into the lights under the drawbridge and my rod got slammed. MetroMan please do not report my fish incorrectly.....it was 18 1/32 inches long not 18 inches. LOL!

Wherever a water body narrows, the current will increase in velocity compared to a wider spot on the same water body (the same amount of water moves through a smaller space -- like putting your finger over half of a garden hose end -- the remaining flow gets faster) . Most bridges are placed in locations where the span can be the shortest (i.e., narrow part of the water body). In addition, the bridge pilings create obstacles to the flow that create local pockets of higher than average and lower than average flow.

That's probably more of a fluid mechanics lesson than you wanted.

Thanks for the report. Southerly and I will check out the same area this afternoon. We plan to launch near the narrows at Kent Island Kayak shop. Their launch fees are lower than the Queen Anne's county ramp permit cost.

              My bad..18 1/32" lol

Dr Ictalurus, I think he actually had a bad knot that caused him to lose the fish. I had a couple of snags, but they were just on nearby pylons/pilings due to current taking my lures so fast.

The water movement was interesting to say the least. If you positioned yourself perfectly, you could ride and eddy and go round & round in a 20' circle. If you get in the center of the channel, you were going for a quick ride down-current.

Yeah it was a bad knot... SMH. I lost my leader due to a VERY errant cast that made me cut my line so I lost my leader... My palomar knot didn't hold up. Ugggh the one that got away...

It was definitely an adventure out there... the current was crazy... there were parts where it just swirled in circles. Crazy. It was definitely an adventure out there... If your going to try to get out there around the bridges, be prepared to PADDLE HARD! LOL Next time we go I am gonna bring some rope to tie off to the little metal steps going up the side of the bridge.

I was looking to go out last night to the Severn or meet up with you guys, but I ended up fighting on the phone with Comcast for 2.5 hours when I got home. When I finished with them , it was too late and I was exhausted from the 2.5 hour bout. I am glad you guys got some pullage. Looks like the metro express is back in business.

nice job, might hit KN up saturday morning since plans for AI got scraped, going to get there 2 hours before dawn this time. looks like they want smaller offerings going to try gotchas and storms, then meet up with shield and keith at spsp around 330pm and show them the ins and outs of heaving heavy metal from the sand. big stripers still havent moved down from NJ. if you get a big fish look for sea lice that means the big ones have turn up into the bay.

looking forward to more of these this spring

                      Some fillets

As I fillets the fish I said let me open it up and see whats its been eating. I found these four guys in there. Those are the same size of the Shad we were using at about 3 inches. The looked more like small WP but couldnt quite tell

LOL Tufnik... it was 18 in the parking lot Metroman and I will attest. I was giving him flak about it coming up short on the water jokingly, but he came in legal... it was definitely close though.
