I'm pretty sure they're fine in pure fresh water. I've had 4 minnows in my aquarium for a few weeks now. I also still have salties and eels from the december meet and greet in a bucket with a filter

i'm almost embarassed to admit this. but i have some minnows in my house aquarium ever since last summer. they're pets now and i could never take them fishing.

when i feed them, they jump out of the water like little dolphins. you should see how happy they get just to see me get off the couch. they follow me from side to side in their tank waggling their little tails. cutest little black eyes watching my every move. they always look so hopeful.

Since they're your friends, maybe you could coax them to help you catch the big ones.

          You must be a redneck...

          Southerly,
There is nothing to be embarrassed about keeping minnows. When my boys were little, we had a 10 gal aquarium. We kept the minnows after fishing small pond near our home. Then we took them for bait for bass next week. We had goldfish and minnows together many times. As long as you don’t name individual minnow such as Betsy, you are OK.

One day my boys and I brought few small bluegills after fishing and put them in the aquarium. Then we found that bluefish were eating goldfish. We were seeing pieces of goldfish. We fed bluegills with guppies in winter from pet store because we couldn’t buy minnows. My wife really hated me keeping bluegills and feeding them with guppies.

She once said “You must be a redneck if you keep bluegill because you can't afford buying piranha”. Though, she never let us buy piranha.

Thanks for te scouting report Ryan. I can't wait to give it a try. I did not get out this weekend except for a fishing flea market in Hay Market , MD. Can you post a pic of the rig that you used for the perch so we can prepare? Especially for the yakers that I heard have never fished for yellow perch.

Never thought of raising my own shiners in a tank at the house, but why not? We make our own lures...build our own rods...why not raise minnows?

Depends on the tackle used- ultra light 4 lb tackle I use for panfishing is pretty simple...an un-painted 1/16 oz jig head tipped with a Gulp or live minnow works pretty well

Saw your video link. Now I know how to make a perch rig.

Is that 5-wrap loop as strong as a dropper loop? I guess we could use a dropper as well.

I tied them similar to the video last year and still had some left over to use. However, I tied a few this year using the knot for the tautog rig but using with two of the knots for hooks instead of one. I think this will work fine too

In other countries, bluegills are sold as aquarium fish. Most of our aquarium fish are, for comparison, other countries blue gill type fish. Selective breeding, of what be buy at pet stores, makes them more colorful.

With that said, Southerly, I have a couple Oscars that would like to come over and visit for a couple hours. House of Tropicals has feeder goldfish 6 for a buck. What colorful bait!

I used to always feed my Oscars left over minnows and night crawlers. I also feed guppies to my African Cichlids, as a treat.

Shinners are easy to catch, with the use of a 2 liter soda bottle type minnow trap. You can make up a bunch of these traps for little or nothing. When you go fishing set a bunch of the traps out in the stream or river, baited with some type of cat food with fish, mixed with corn meal. Just squeeze the cat food mix into the bottle and drop them to the bottom. This also works for silversides out in deeper bay water. Of course Clyde's always has good shinners. I generally stop by and pick up a few dozen on my way to the upper Potomac.
