Anyone here fish the Occoquan River off the Potomac? I fished there once before in my boat for bass. Any launches in the River near the Potomac so as not to have to paddle so far? Heard the Crappie are stacked up and hungry there. If one launches in Occoquan do they need VA license or is MD license still reciprocal? Would really like some crappie action.

If I understand it correctly, the reciprocal agreement between VA and MD extends there. If you have a MD tidal license, you should be good.

You can launch your yak from Occoquan Regional Park and start hitting the docks for crappie. Big snakeheads are in the area, too. There's a little gravelly beach by the parking for the boat ramp.

Occoquan River:
North of I95 bridge: VA freswater License
South of I95 Bridge: VA/MD salt/tidal water license
http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/fishing...eciprocity.asp
It is less than a mile paddling from the Occoquan regional park to I 95 Bridge.
I fish the most of time in the Freshwater - better fishing. You may expect:
in Feb: YP, Crappie, LM - small number of YP showed up last week
in March: Shad,YP, Crappie, LM
Launch fee: $4.00 (deposit box is by the launch site).
Pohick Bay: VA/MD Salt/Tidal License
In summer Pohick Bay is for big LM and SnakeHead.
BTW I can be there at Occoquan Regional Park on Sat around 10AM if you are coming - I am drinking late tonight
Also if you want Crappie bring a short UL (4-5' long) rod if you have it. Or you can use mine

Low tide at 10:00AM. I will try my best to get there areound 9:00AM. Look for me - a guy wearing a blue helmet with a camera.
My friend, the King Crappie has been catching crappie at 16-17 inches for the last 2 weeks.
A UL rod ( 4-5' long) with #4-6# test mono is good for Occoquan dock fishing for crappie. Make sure that replace the mono line if is old and coiled up (due to the mono line memory). You are casting 6-12' distance many time with 1/16oz weight.
for the YP and anything else, bring a two piece rod so that you can put into the bow hatch when fishing for Crappie.
You can always beach the kayak for leak and replace rod for YP or Crappie.
Due to low tide at 10:00am, You may start with crappie first.
the wind will be mild and the current won't be strong. Though bring a anchor (1-3lb) if you have it. If you locate the YP you want to stay there. The max depth will be around 30' for YP and 8-12' for Crappie

I'm planning to be out there tomorrow, so hopefully I'll see you guys out there. I'll be paddling a red Ocean Kayak. I'm curious on what the water temp is going to be. Once it hits 55, the shad will infest that area . Still way too early for that, but I have a feeling everything is going to come early this year. Hope to see you guys there!
