Take rt. 210 South (Indian Head Highway) until you come to the end at the front gate of the Naval Weapons Station- take left on Mattingly (last street before entry into base) follow to end- launch is at end of Mattingly Street

            jffoley,

Do you think that Hmart place might have menhaden or herring/shad?

Another NOVA person here trying to find a good bait place.

            Thanks man!

I was there last week looking for bait. I found frozen yellow croaker, mullet and some other fish, but I did not find any menhaden or shad. May have missed it though, there's quite a selection.

NICE! I'm sure that anything fresh and fishy will work on those blue cats.. Caught a ton on BGs this summer.

You won't find menhaden but plenty of other oily fish. Ixnay on herring this year as well due to the moratorium...

Wow, I guess not, I read the article for MD and it looks like as long as the stores harvested the fish before December 26th, 2011 they are allowed to sell the frozen stock until June of this year - and as long as you have proof of purchase you're ok?

So I guess catching blue back herring in the Potomac for spring Stripers is out of the question this year, although they haven't been that plentiful in years past.

                    Thanks for the info

Best substitution i have found for Herring and Shad for Bluecats..

You can purchase Cob Mullett from most asia markets I.E. Global, El Grande, World, Le Kim Etc...

Typically it ranges from $2-$4 per lb and 2lbs will supply you with enough bait to fish for 8+ hours 3-4 people.

This is how i have gotten around getting fresh shad and herring with the issues and closures.

Hope this helps you find bait in the winter months.

Omega Protein has just about eradicated all such oily fish including Menhaden to use as fish meal for animal food and fertilizers- They are a company that is going to singled handedly kill the entire species and cause an extinction.

Now let me get off the soap box and say I picked up three packs of bunker (three fish per pack) at Freds on the way home from work today- threw them in my freezer without letting them thaw, so we should have enough bunker baits for catfishing Saturday...looks like we will get some heavy rain Thursday night and Friday morning, so expect the water to be stained.

Fished Mattawoman Creek today- I caught five catfish- four on cut bunker, one on a live minnow on UL 4 lb test- I fished with my travel rods today to test them under regular fishing conditions- Revo SX was on the Charkbait 20# Explorer rod and I used it for bottom fishing with the bunker- caught catfish up to 10 pounds today- travel rod was really nice- got my February fish- we had a big MKF crew today- I believe everyone caught at least one fish-

I must say that this club is by far the most giving, inviting and willing to help anyone who shares the same admiration of kayak fishing.

Ron - thanks for the bait, only one bump in the hole closer to the ramp. I hear you guys were doing better up creek.

Only one fish, but that brings the species list to 4..

Temp topped out at 60*... was pretty windy.

I caught a nice 24" cat (my biggest ever), and a largemouth bass.

Here are some pics, including Chimo's MONSTER cat.
