  • Susky Flats - 3-14-2012

Well today was my maiden voyage on my Yak and I must say that I am so thankful Don was selling this. I had a great time out on the water today
The Prowler Big Game handled great. i was even able to stand with no issues! Thanks again Don. Great Yak!

    Well on to the report....

Water temps in the upper portion of the flats was sitting right at 48.5 degrees. Beautiful day. I launched a little later then I wanted to (11pm and first time loading the Kayak on my Thule rails)

My plan was to do some trolling but that never materialized as I realized that I had left all my leader line at home. 12lb mono wasn't gonna cut it so I decided to just work the channels and shore.

I worked the Eastern side of the flats, north of the I-95 Bridge. I started with a Bk / Wht Tsunami Shad. Probably 10 - 15 casts in I had my first fish on. Really fat LMB. Not too much longer I had another one. Similar in size and fat. It appears they have been eating quite well.

Things went pretty dead for the next couple of hours as the tide went slack and the sun was high so I decided to change over to a Chartruese swimmer and fished it very slow like a texas-rigged worm. Several casts later I landed another LMB. Pretty good one as well.

Wrapped it up after about another hour when I got hung up 3 times in a row. Not a bad day with 3 LMB in the 5 -7lb range.

No stripers unfortunately....I believe once the temp hits 55 the bigs ones will move in.

Things i learned from my first Yak trip....

    1. Pick the side of the launch ramp that is not like quicksand when launching. I thought I'd never get out of that muck.

    2. Don't bring so many rods as they get in the way. For me, I think 3 is the max. I brought 5 today and they were in the way quite a bit.

    3. Double-check to make sure you have everything before leaving. I know better than this.

I dropped several other fish. The LMB are definitely biting.

Very cool, and nice fish. I usually only carry 3 rods. Sometimes I carry 4 if I'm indecisive, but 4 gets to be a pain.

Great job man! Those bass are real nice! Were you fishing drop offs in open water? Did you spot them on the FF and drop a line? Were you fishing structure? I'd really like to get out to the flats for some fishing but I have no idea how or what to fish.

Susquehanna River. Right in the Havre de Grace / Port Deposit / Perryville, MD area.

              Below the Conowingo Dam.

Thanks Guys. Pretty good luck today.

to answer your question I was working the rocky shoreline which goes from 3 -4 ft to 20 - 30ft in a very short distance. I was spotting fish on the FF but I didn't catch them when they were on the screen. I'm so used to fishing on shore that I probably didn't pay as much attention to the FF as I should have. Gotta get used to using the screen. I was pretty much casting up to structure and working the lure back down the slope slowly.

IMO with water temps in the high 40's things gotta be worked slow. My go-to lures are swim shads. I work them just like a worm, twitches and pauses. You'll get hung quite a bit but that's where the fish are IMO. Storms, Tsunamis, Fin-S are all good soft plastics for me.

Definitely get out there. The fishing is only gonna pickup from this point.

                Good luck

MTD, so what do you think of kayak fishing. Things are really going to get very good in your area.

PS: Just read your report. They were some nice largemouth. Largemouth, smallmouth and stripers, all in the same area, must be great. You will get better with the depth finder. Good Luck.

Wow those are some nice bass. I haven't caught bass that big since my last trip to Canada. Susq is a little too far north for me though.

Don, it was great. Right up there with the best times I've had fishing. I especially like the peace and solace. I've stared from shore at the areas I fished today wondering how the fishing was there.

Can only imagine what your new Kayak will be like considering how great mine is.

Great Bass Fishing ..... congrats ........ and the Stripers are on the way ....... with these temps they should be early ........ usually the males show first then the cows ......... looks like it won't be much time between the bucks and the cows this year .......... if these temps hold they will probably be here in about 2 weeks ........ might want to rethink the April Meet and greet ......... looks like the big girls will be here early this year ........
