Well today was my maiden voyage on my Yak and I must say that I am so thankful Don was selling this. I had a great time out on the water today
The Prowler Big Game handled great. i was even able to stand with no issues! Thanks again Don. Great Yak!
Well on to the report....
Water temps in the upper portion of the flats was sitting right at 48.5 degrees. Beautiful day. I launched a little later then I wanted to (11pm and first time loading the Kayak on my Thule rails)
My plan was to do some trolling but that never materialized as I realized that I had left all my leader line at home. 12lb mono wasn't gonna cut it so I decided to just work the channels and shore.
I worked the Eastern side of the flats, north of the I-95 Bridge. I started with a Bk / Wht Tsunami Shad. Probably 10 - 15 casts in I had my first fish on. Really fat LMB. Not too much longer I had another one. Similar in size and fat. It appears they have been eating quite well.
Things went pretty dead for the next couple of hours as the tide went slack and the sun was high so I decided to change over to a Chartruese swimmer and fished it very slow like a texas-rigged worm. Several casts later I landed another LMB. Pretty good one as well.
Wrapped it up after about another hour when I got hung up 3 times in a row. Not a bad day with 3 LMB in the 5 -7lb range.
No stripers unfortunately....I believe once the temp hits 55 the bigs ones will move in.
Things i learned from my first Yak trip....
1. Pick the side of the launch ramp that is not like quicksand when launching. I thought I'd never get out of that muck.
2. Don't bring so many rods as they get in the way. For me, I think 3 is the max. I brought 5 today and they were in the way quite a bit.
3. Double-check to make sure you have everything before leaving. I know better than this.
I dropped several other fish. The LMB are definitely biting.
