Fished for a couple of hours this morning south of the bay bridge. Anne Arundel has a car top boat launch at Mayo Wind Beach Park in Edgewater. This park is south of Thomas Point State Park and on the south river. In order to launch there you have to get a permit from Anne Arundel county. I believe it was $40 for six months. Information can be found on Anne Arundel county parks web page.
After you get the permit they give you the combination to the gate so you can have access 7 days a week. It's a little strange as there is a gate across the entrance of the park that says the park is closed. There is no lock on that gate and you can open the gate and drive in. Then there is a chain across a gravel entrance just to the left of the main gate. This is where you need the combination to open the gate. You can drive right up to the beach, drop off your kayak and then park back beside the road in a small lower lot. It's the easiest beach launch I have done anywhere around. Drag the boat 15 feet and your in the water and it goes right to 3 feet deep 10 feet off the beach making it easy to drop in the pedals.
I pedaled north east to Thomas Point light trolling up and around the light. It's about 3 miles to get to the Thomas Point. Bay was a little bumpy with some big swells. Did a little jigging around the light but the swells were really bad around the lighthouse. I Then trolled south about a mile then back in. Didn't have a lot of time today to fish. I marked several fish south of the light in 30 feet of water but couldn't get a hit. Very disappointing. Clearly the place to fish is east of the light in 25 to 40 feet of water. I should have started out going due east to 30 feet of water than trolled north to the light. Didn't have enough time to spend more than about 20 minutes in that area because of the three mile trip back to the beach.
Mayo Beach is the closest launch I could find to Thomas Point. Anne Arundel County no longer as a car top boat launch at Thomas Point Park. That's too bad as it would save at least a mile getting to the light. For stripers Mayo beach is probably a bit far of a trip to get to the fishing. I'm sure in the summer the light would be a good place for blues and spanish. If fishing the mouth of the south river is a goal, this would be the best place to launch. The cost of a permit is a bit expensive for only 6 months but it's a very easy launch. I'll have to make a few more trips out of there this summer to see if it's worth getting another permit again.
