  • Mayo Wind Beach- Edgewater

Fished for a couple of hours this morning south of the bay bridge. Anne Arundel has a car top boat launch at Mayo Wind Beach Park in Edgewater. This park is south of Thomas Point State Park and on the south river. In order to launch there you have to get a permit from Anne Arundel county. I believe it was $40 for six months. Information can be found on Anne Arundel county parks web page.

After you get the permit they give you the combination to the gate so you can have access 7 days a week. It's a little strange as there is a gate across the entrance of the park that says the park is closed. There is no lock on that gate and you can open the gate and drive in. Then there is a chain across a gravel entrance just to the left of the main gate. This is where you need the combination to open the gate. You can drive right up to the beach, drop off your kayak and then park back beside the road in a small lower lot. It's the easiest beach launch I have done anywhere around. Drag the boat 15 feet and your in the water and it goes right to 3 feet deep 10 feet off the beach making it easy to drop in the pedals.

I pedaled north east to Thomas Point light trolling up and around the light. It's about 3 miles to get to the Thomas Point. Bay was a little bumpy with some big swells. Did a little jigging around the light but the swells were really bad around the lighthouse. I Then trolled south about a mile then back in. Didn't have a lot of time today to fish. I marked several fish south of the light in 30 feet of water but couldn't get a hit. Very disappointing. Clearly the place to fish is east of the light in 25 to 40 feet of water. I should have started out going due east to 30 feet of water than trolled north to the light. Didn't have enough time to spend more than about 20 minutes in that area because of the three mile trip back to the beach.

Mayo Beach is the closest launch I could find to Thomas Point. Anne Arundel County no longer as a car top boat launch at Thomas Point Park. That's too bad as it would save at least a mile getting to the light. For stripers Mayo beach is probably a bit far of a trip to get to the fishing. I'm sure in the summer the light would be a good place for blues and spanish. If fishing the mouth of the south river is a goal, this would be the best place to launch. The cost of a permit is a bit expensive for only 6 months but it's a very easy launch. I'll have to make a few more trips out of there this summer to see if it's worth getting another permit again.

That is funny, I just left from there about 7:30 tonight. I have the permit and this was my first trip there this year. did not launch. fished the shore for WP. I have had luck there in the summer. Nada tonight. It is a very clean park and there are restrooms. I started out looking for Blackwalnut cove but ended up near spa creek??. After wasting valuable daylight, I headed for Mayo. I had wanted to try blackwalnut out for some perch. I always get twisted around in Annapolis for some reason. I ended up on blackwalnut ct. but no luck finding a launch. Any help on directions would be appreciated.

As for Mayo, nice and quite place to go and you are right, the launch is easy. Better luck on the strippers next time.

they've installed a lot of structure at the park that should be good for schoolies and perch, at least at times. just offshore of the thomas point park across the river there are underwater rockpiles at mouth of fishing creek (i think is the name) that are very productive. check your charts and lenny rudow's book for more info.

in sept-oct the area between mayo and tp park often has schoolie surface action in the evenings but is major powerboat traffic zone, open choppy water.

not to take anything away from it, but TPL is subject to lots of 'fishing' pressure all through summer and is a major nav mark/turn for all south river powerboat traffic heading north to annapolis or bridge. nearly everyone with a motor likes to stop at the lighthouse and cast at it (LTJ) with motor running non-stop until they're certain there's no fish, then zoom off to other places. ALL day long.

for spanish macs; JMHO, but i think just outside of gum thickets and mouth of ebay from bpl to popular island are most productive areas in that portion of the bay. acces is a little far for yak and those waters are subject to bay chop. mouth of ebay has a lot of inconsiderate big yacht-type boat traffic - watch yourself. queen anne marina on kent island 'may be' a launch spot - call ahead. i used to WS there and over the years, they have been on/off as regards access. similar with kent moor marina and restaurant.

Blackwalnut Creek is a small tidal creek/pond that enters the bay between Tolly Pt and Thomas Point. From the bay, look for the large red building (Chesapeake Bay Foundation headquarters) that is at the mouth of Blackwalnut. The entrance channel to Blackwalnut is narrow and twisty, and will not always float a kayak when the water is low. I tried it years ago and ended up dragging partway to get out the entrance channel.

Thanks for the info about the park. $40 might be a bit too steep for me because I don't get up there very often. Do you know if it's good at some of the other parks?

Since this is a county park, the fee is probably good only for that one place. Unlike the state park pass which is good for all state parks.

If any of you folks are vets or currently serving, Anne Arundel will give you a free pass to Quiet Waters for you and your spouse.

                    Regards,
                    John

Beverly Triton Park is next to Mayo. Ever try to launch from there? I shore fished there about two years ago. You park your car outside the chain link fence and walk about 250 yds to the sandy beach. If the car gate is locked, you can go through the walk-through gate. There was no fee. If I recall, I called and just let the ranger know I was visiting. I wonder if they changed their access procedures.

Beverly Triton is not listed on the Anne Arundel Parks and Recreation list. Can it be it has been sold off?

I have sailed from Mayo Beach in years gone by. It was always a great place during the week. During the weekends the area gets pretty busy.

It is a good place to launch for evening Croaker fishing as you don't have far to paddle. The price is now $45.

I visited Beverly Triton beach park about two weeks ago on a Monday. I drove there and saw the driveway gate closed. There is a small parking lot outside the fence, but it was conspicuously marked with "no parking allowed signs" every 20 ft along the fence line. Since it was a weekday, I parked there anyway and walked through the unlocked pedestrian gate into the park and found access to the shore of Deep Pond, a nice looking salt pond. That day the wind was howling, and I was not able to get a lure out far enough to do any good. The bottom had lots of green slime on it that covered the lure on many of my casts. After 15 minutes of frustration, I hurried back to the car with the hope of not having a ticket. Fortunately, there was no ticket.

There is a brief summary about the park at: http://www.aacounty.org/RecParks/lau...erlytriton.cfm

When I shore fished there, I didn't catch anything. It's somewhat shallow for some distance out. There are a number of equally spaced rock barriers about 150 ft from shore. I was thinking of that place not for fishing, but as another yak launch point. There was no fee for me to access and fish the beach. A fee for yak launching probable is not required as well. I think a fee is required for camping and holding events.

The parking is mainly along the shoulder. Admittedly, not a lot of cars can park there. There is more parking across the street though. The paved area in front of the chain linked fence entry should be clear for access. I think there is a No Trespassing sign there too, which leads you to think it's not for the public. Again, this place may be an option for yak launching. Someone may want to call Park Management for more info.

I printed out an application and am going to join this season. I figure I will use it on weekdays after work since it only takes about 20 minutes to get there.
