  • Solley's 6/20 - One nice rock and lots of small perch

Took advantage of the day off (and much lighter winds) today and launched at Solley's around 7:15. Wasn't expecting much, but figured if rock were going to be anywhere, it was likely to be in bigger water so paddled out to the ship graveyard. Stopped and caught a bunch of small perch and a some teeny-tiny rock along the way. Once I trolled out past the beltway bridge, I got a nice hit that turned out to be a 12" bluefish. More passes in the area netted a few 13"-15" rock and then I finally found what I was looking for (or it found me). 23.5" - my biggest of the year - sent the drag on my light tackle rod screaming for a bit. Stuck around the area for a bit longer and managed a few more small rock, then headed back to try and find a holdover pickerel to complete my Curtis Crush. No luck, and was off the water by noon.

I have to say, I really like Solley's. It's super convenient for me (about 15 min) and has a really nice ramp and great parking. But the litter just kills me. I filled up nearly half of a 40-gallon trash bag in the dock/launch area alone. Don't understand people at all...

    Nice!
Havn’t seen any reports on blue fish yet but have to figure they are in the bay by now. Blues definitely add to the fun if you enjoy them.

I understand your frustration. It’s disheartening to see trash and filth everywhere. Specially at hotspots. Guarantee closure. And rightfully so. One of my hotpot’s is always littered with trash and fish carcasses on the shore. Because of that I only go there certain times of the year.

What was the depth were you caught the 23.5?

Good to hear that the perch are at Solley's. I haven't been in a few weeks due to the sewage spill. I am hoping to hit Solley's on Saturday morning. Thank you for the report

Nice work Scorchy. I've been having trouble finding any rockfish at all lately, a 23"+ would be awesome right about now haha

I was trolling a 1/4 oz jighead, so just a few feet. If you mean water depth, not sure exactly. I was in the channel so not super shallow.

Thanks, Rob. Just so you know, the jet ski traffic on the weekends has been pretty brutal in the late afternoon/early evening. And if you head out to the ship graveyard, be aware of the boat traffic in the channel.

BTW, I belatedly responded to your PM. Tough for me to see notifications with the latest iteration of the board software.

Scorchy (Dave) ...that's too bad, I don't recall a lot of jet ski traffic last year, but I dread seeing them near me when I am fishing. Most of my fishing going forward will probably be around sunrise...fishing is usually better and the power boats and jet skis normally are not too bad in the early morning....now if we could just get rid of the trotline crabbers :--) Also, I am having the same issue with notifications of PM's. I am glad you pointed it out...I just responded to yours as well.

I am very glad the board is back up...i feel like i lose touch when it is down.,
