  • Piney Point Report 7/28/2024

First post in a long time. I took a long break from fishing and have been trying to get out a lot more lately.

Launched at Piney Point around 0630 and worked the shoreline during outgoing tide for specs and red drum. The grass is pretty thick now and was difficult to troll or cast any lures in anything shallower than 4 feet.

There was a lot of bait around and they could be seen swimming around the surface, but not a lot of bites.

Managed to get one redfish around 20” on a red jig head with 4” chartreuse swimming mullet trolling along the weed line and my buddy hooked up another one blind casting I think but we never got to see it as his line broke.

It was a slow day with no other bites but was happy to get my first ever redfish and a keeper at that!

With the remainder of the summer I think I’ll either stick to snakehead fishing or plan a drive to either OCMD or VA beach as it’s been pretty slow for me around the PLO/Piney Point area the 2 trips I’ve gone.

Thanks for the report. I went out Tuesday and yesterday in the afternoon/evening and had a similar experience. Did see some action on the surface though, that I suspect were bluefish chasing bait. Tuesday we were out for about four hours. I emded up with three slot reds: 20", 21", & 22"-plus a nice perch. My buddy got a 17"ish rock and two perch. Yesterday I went out solo for a couple of hours and got a 14" red. We'll see if the weather is favorable for the weekeend.

Nice work! What did you catch yours on?

I wonder how big those blues are, I thought there might have been blues as well but never managed to hook one

Great report. That area has been paying off pretty well for me this year, but you're right about the grass: it's crazy thick now. I'm also itching for a trip to Va. Beach to look for sheepshead, and maybe troll outside Rudee Inlet if the king mackerel show up this year.

We're (I usually fish with two other guys) mostly using 1/4 to 1/8 oz. (Red or pink) jigheads and 4" paddletails. It seems pink or pearl have been the trick the last couple weeks. We've also had great luck with chartreuse or pink (1/4oz) spinner baits. Pink was the ticket for me on Tuesday. I was using a perch hounder.
