  • Rhode River Meat Run

Since i am on the last 3 days of vacation and my freezer is void of fish i decide to make a run up to Carr's wharf for a perch run. I got to the launch at 10:30 and decided to pack lite for todays run.

    1 UL rod
1 small tackle box with perch lures
    VHF
    Cams for the action.

I made my way to the first dock and started pitching a beetle spin into the pylons. After the third cast i laid my rod down across the bow and turned around to grab my tackle box and it happened. My rod (unleashed) was laying over the paddle and when i turned around the paddle flipped my UL rod into the drink. I tried to use the paddle to catch the rod as it was slowly sinking but i was to late. My favorite and only UL rod was gone. The rod that has caught way too many fish to count is now settled in 6 feet of murky bay water. I felt sick to my stomach. I looked around and made a mental mark of my location and made my way back to the ramp to grab another rod to try and fish my prized rod out of the drink.

Since i packed light i did not have my GPS to mark the location or an extra rod in the kayak or i would have pulled it back out quickly.

I looked in my small tackle box and pulled out some small perch lures with trebles, a jig head and a small sinker. I made a dredge rig and started working the area where the rod went in. I pulled all sorts of stuff up but could not find my rod. I gave up after 1.5 hrs and made one more drag and i caught the rod. My one and only UL rod, My precious........

The feelings of dread for the past 2 hours were replaced with joy. That was my most exciting catch in years. The game was back on now.

Being extra careful i fished the docks until around 3 and packed it up. The perch were hungry and i caught 30 or so fish keeping any over 8". I ended up with 17 fish in the bag ranging from 8" to 11". Mission accomplished.

I just got done rebuilding the reel that spent 1.5 hours in the muck. All is well with it and hopefully i will continue to fish this rod for another 20 years.

    Video Recap.

Whew! I'm glad you got your rod back. My heart sank a bit when I saw you lost your favorite rod. I thought, "Oh no, not Mike, too!" Catching perch for dinner was a nice bonus.

Glad you got that favorite combo back, your dredging payed off. I fish that area often (4-5 times a season) and out in front @ MAyo beach (every other weekend). Always enjoy being back in the quite coves on the Rhodes. I see signs posted that no harvesting of clams or oysters allowed, do you know any locations of the bars, I like to drift fish over them if I can find them.

"my precious" bad sh!t happens when unleashed. my leashes are on my yak rods all the time using masons line velcro strips at the reel and at the base of the rod, when in the truck the leash is wound around the handle. they are about 6" long with ss spring clip on the end that i hook to my seat rings
