Since i am on the last 3 days of vacation and my freezer is void of fish i decide to make a run up to Carr's wharf for a perch run. I got to the launch at 10:30 and decided to pack lite for todays run.
1 UL rod
1 small tackle box with perch lures
VHF
Cams for the action.
I made my way to the first dock and started pitching a beetle spin into the pylons. After the third cast i laid my rod down across the bow and turned around to grab my tackle box and it happened. My rod (unleashed) was laying over the paddle and when i turned around the paddle flipped my UL rod into the drink. I tried to use the paddle to catch the rod as it was slowly sinking but i was to late. My favorite and only UL rod was gone. The rod that has caught way too many fish to count is now settled in 6 feet of murky bay water. I felt sick to my stomach. I looked around and made a mental mark of my location and made my way back to the ramp to grab another rod to try and fish my prized rod out of the drink.
Since i packed light i did not have my GPS to mark the location or an extra rod in the kayak or i would have pulled it back out quickly.
I looked in my small tackle box and pulled out some small perch lures with trebles, a jig head and a small sinker. I made a dredge rig and started working the area where the rod went in. I pulled all sorts of stuff up but could not find my rod. I gave up after 1.5 hrs and made one more drag and i caught the rod. My one and only UL rod, My precious........
The feelings of dread for the past 2 hours were replaced with joy. That was my most exciting catch in years. The game was back on now.
Being extra careful i fished the docks until around 3 and packed it up. The perch were hungry and i caught 30 or so fish keeping any over 8". I ended up with 17 fish in the bag ranging from 8" to 11". Mission accomplished.
I just got done rebuilding the reel that spent 1.5 hours in the muck. All is well with it and hopefully i will continue to fish this rod for another 20 years.
