  • Upper Severn 11/13 - Interesting night and a rookie mistake

I hit the water around 4 to catch the end of an incoming tide. I worked my usual spots with no love. I decided to move a little further out into the channel and picked up this nice 23"er. The water was MUCH better today than Monday. Far fewer leaves and no other boats.

I had noticed a lot of small fish on the surface so I decided to focus on them on my way back in. I threw everything I had at them and finally scored about an 8" WP. I'm not sure it was schooled up WP breaking the surface, though. Maybe bait??? I'm talking about a LOT of top water action. Nothing looked very big, but I'm not sure what they were doing or feeding on.

So...on my way back in I see a fox running along the beach. Pretty cool, but then I started thinking about how I was going to get my stuff back to the truck - multiple trips - without the fox stealing my fish. Decided to put the fish in the truck and come back for the yak. When I got back down I took the second pic. Anybody see anything wrong with this pic??? Yes, that is my yak, and yes, I took the pic...

Had waders on and got about waste deep before the cold water and better judgement took over. The wind finally blew it over to the pier after ten or fifteen minutes.

Life always delivers unexpected surprises to keep things interesting. I'm glad you were able to get everything back to normal without too much drama.

        Nice fish!

Yes it does! That was a total dumb*** attack but sometimes you just have to laugh at yourself. Too funny not to share. You can bet that I'll never do it again, though.

That sounds like something right out of my play-book! Glad to have company and glad you got your yak back. It must have been the fox, pissed off you didn't provide dinner.

I agree with Ed. Don't feel alone.

Thanks, guys. Ed, I think you're right. The fox probably doubled back and pushed it in the water while I was taking pics of the fish!

Don't feel too bad. I was out last March for what I had hoped would be some emergency pullage. I borrowed my sisters piece of shit sit on top kayak w/ no back support. My back was getting stiff, so I got off the kayak and was fishing from one of her neighbor's piers. I tried to get back in that piece of shit kayak from the pier in deep water and capsized into 42 degree water wearing heavy clothes and with my cell phone on me.

I never found my sunken rod, and needless to say, my Blackberry was shot. And yes, it was a cold paddle and drive home that day - with no fish to show for it. The moral; never bring a cell phone, and never try to get from a pier to a piece of shit kayak in deep water. Steve

I think that happens to everyone once.

I had beached my yak in a cove on a reservoir and got out to fish a laydown just down the shoreline around the corner. As I was casting away what do I see? My pilot-less kayak cruising along in the breeze. Fortunately I was able to snag her with cast before she sailed out of reach.

Nice fish Doug. You have them dialed in pretty well in your part of the river.

I'm glad you were able to retrieve your kayak without any serious mishap other than bruised ego.

Thanks, John. I'm starting to feel like a one trick pony. Then again, I suppose it is not a bad trick to know. I'd like to get out down around Jonas sometime soon. I'm going to have to get ready for the SRRKC tournament!

Luckily the ego wasn't really that bruised. I found myself standing on the beach laughing and just happy no one else was there filming me. That being said, I might have made a few bucks on America's Funniest Home Videos...
