  • Mattawoman 3/1

My mother-in-law was in town again, so I went out in the morning in search of fish for dinner. I wanted to get some blue catfish, and didn't have much confidence in the Occoquan after my last couple trips ...so I went to the Mattawoman, where I at least knew where some catfish would be holding out.

The day started out nice and calm, and got windy very soon after I anchored up to soak some bait. I caught a small white perch, and 2 23" blue catfish right off the bat. However, the next 3 hours were uneventful and cold. I went home with 2 catfish, one of which we had for dinner. The fillets from the other are in the freezer for later.

The Mattawoman looks like a totally different place in the winter from the summer. From fishing there in the summer, I would never have thought that the creek was so wide. Crazy...

Catch all the blues you can- DNR loves us blue catfish eaters...and they are the tastiest of the cats to eat, too! Mattawoman is a consistent catfish hole- got to anchor up, though- drifting this time of year is a waste of time. As soon as I can, I plan on going back to stock up my freezer for filets. If you use a vacuum sealer the filets will last a real long time in the freezer and will taste fresh caught when you thaw them out-

              Nice cats, Sun!

Yeah, without all the weeds, the creek is wide, but often very shallow on the edges.

Glad you caught a fish. I'm thinking about going this weekend, but thinking about going after catfish/crappie instead of pickerel/perch at the Severn.

You thinkin' about going out again this weekend?

I thought about fishing the Creek, but decided I wanted a mess of trout before they are all caught out, so Saturday I'll go trout fishing for my limit of five Rainbow/Brown trout- they are fairly small, but on UL tackle they put up a pretty good fight- not like a big blue cat, but still a lot of fun to catch- and I usually catch several crappie/bass as a by-catch fishing for them. A big cow LM bass in pre-span on UL is a tough customer-

Where are you going to go after trout? I have never been after trout but have always wanted to catch one. Would you like some company? What kind of tackle other than an ultralight spinner would I need? Live bait or artificial?

Headed to Myrtle Grove WMA just off Rt. 225 Saturday morning at 9 am- there are two fishable bodies of water there- a 23 acre lake and a 10 acre pond- both stocked- I use roostertail spinners in several colors- white speckled with black spots and yellow speckled with black spots seem to work best although I have caught a bunch on Mepps squrrieltails and Mepps plain hook spinners- fishing with these lures you will also catch crappie and LM bass as a by-catch-

Unless you have a senior consolidated fishing license, you will need to buy a trout stamp-

What size spinners do you use?
