Black squirrerls are actually eastern gray squirrels with a genetic mutation that causes excessive pigmentation. Individual black-phase gray squirrels are either the result of a spontaneous mutation, or they have inherited the black trait (i.e. melanism - opposite of albinism).

What really freaked me out is the giant mutant squirrel I saw while golfing in Myrtle Beach. I think the call them coon squirrels or something. They are huge!Native Slayer 12
