Been doing a little bass fishing from the yak lately and after some success at Matawomen a couple weeks ago I want more action so went to mariner point the last 2 weekends hoping for some local action.

Sunday 8-18 Was my 1st time getting all the way to the quarry. Thats actually a longer run than I thought it would be. definately have to find a short cut I can get the hobie through. Wound up with 3 bass and a small yellow perch that day. Got the 1st fish of close to 4 lbs out around the 2nd point before going into the canal leading to the quarry. saw the fish jump completely out of the water about 50 yards from where i was fishing and put on a popper and worked that area hard for about an hour and finally got him. Had a nice explosion when he hit and a few more jumps bringing it in.

Then headed up the canal and the current was ripping through there. unfortunately it was outgoing. Pedaled all the way to the quarry and fished for a couple hours but no love there. decided I would drift back out the canal and fish the shore lines. lots of lay downs to hit. stopped at the little island before the quarry opening where alot of people were bank fishing. while talking to a few folks there was a big splash near the island and i pedaled over and tossed a big jig and craw down between a couple logs where the splash came from. no sooner than it hit the water and sunk a couple feet, i gave it a twitch and thought I was hung till i felt the head shakes and then muscled it out of the structure. It gave a great fight with multiple jumps while circling my kayak and pulling drag. turned out to be a nice chunk of near 5 lbs. I let out a big HELL YEAH after landing it and the bank fishermen were even cheering me on....lol. That definately made my day!

After a few more casts in the area, decided to go ahead and drift back out the canal and hit the shore lines. By this time the current was coming back in. i still stooped at a few lay downs and picked up another small bass and even a small yellow perch that hit a small jig with a green pumkin twister tail.

Worst part about that trip was i went solo and only had my cell phone to try to get pics of the big one. snapped a couple but they turned out like crap IMO. I think it might be time to get a GoPro and a measuring device.

Went out again today for a few hours after a real late start and picked up 3 bass. my GF went today but she got skunked. she was grumbling that she finally learned how to catch Rockfish in the bay (on our power boat) and now that im into bass fishing, she has to learn a completely new way to fish....lol. I have no doubts she'll pick it up pretty quick though. She's a quick learner and a pretty good fisherwomen. She did have one hit but lost it when her leader came un-done from the braid and swears I tied that knot...lol. Today i used a texas rigged finesse worm around the wood to get my 3. wew were all the way back near the quarry when the sun set and tried some top water frog fishing on the way in but it got dark real fast and either one of us has lights on the yak. It gets Freakin Dark back there!!! I turned my FF around to give me a little light and so others could see us but unfortunately the battery died about halfway back. cant understand why though. It was only my 7th trip out without charging....lol. Havent picked up a charger for my new setup yet.

So now not only do i need a better camera setup & A measuring device, I need to rig up some lights and pick up a charger.

We are heading back out there tomorrow to check out some other areas and hoping for even better luck!

Nice report, sometimes I wish I took more time bass fishing. Even from the cell phone pic I can tell that bass is a BEAST!

      nice bass!!

measuring device - for me, the hawg trough is one of my favorite purchases. I really feel the pressure to get a fish back in the water quick. even so - position the fish's nose against the end of the hawg trough and have accurate measurement in an instant even in the excitement of an important catch.

camera - I have a great camera (Panasonic ts4) that takes beautiful pics, great quality vid. but I still lose opportunities due to camera not filming always, not beginning to film when I hit the button, and dead batteries. frustrating.

Nice! What kind of depth did you see back in the quarry?

Cage Rattler - Were you by any chance the guy I talked to that found the shortcut through the woods today?

You had much better luck than I did yesterday. Today though I nailed 2 in a couple of casts at that same 2nd point today and a nice 4lb maybe a hundred yards before the yard right turn to the quarry.

Yep that was us. We were just getting out after a late night last night and thought we would give the short cut a try. Its a clear path through there and only maybe 20 yards from shore to shore. its just a steep drop off, mainly on the canal side. Did'nt try to go back through on the way out. With 2 of us it wasnt to bad even with the heavily loaded outback. I would never attempt hauling the outback through there by myself though. Been thinking about getting a smaller lighter yak for quick outings during the week by myself and will definately use that short cut when I want to go all the way back there.

By the way..... I still havent had any luck on the spinner baits...lol.

There's a shortcut through the woods, but I just walk the kayak through the trail at the north end of the quarry. It's a steep descent to put in, but the shortcut isn't exactly a cake walk either :-)

After a late night last night we went back out today but didnt get out there till close to noon which was right around high tide.
Fished our way up the canal towards the quarry an on into the quarry today and only saw one other person fishing. Was wondering If everyone knew something we didnt cause we didnt get a single hit till around 4 PM when I started throwing a clackin Crank bait near the center island and hooked my 1st ever pickeral.

My GF was a good bit away from me when i hooked it and yelled Pickeral. She had never seen one and started heading over to see it. I dont know what i was thinking at the time cause im so used to hand landing these bass and had a net right behind me. I was just holding its head up out of the water looking at those teeth and waiting for her to get there to see it. i could see it was barely hooked and it got off before she got there. My 1st ever pickeral and didnt even think about grabbing the net to land it. I felt like a complete idiot! hopefully there will be more in the future. I could see it was right around 20 inches and would have loved to have gotten some pics of. Stayed in that area about an hour hoping for another but no such luck.

After no hits for another hour on the crank bait I switched baits to a 3/8ths football jig with a green & black horny toad as the trailer and the 3rd cast got me about a 2lb bass. Then nothing again for another hour so we beached the yaks and had some lunch and stretched our legs a bit.

Started heading back as the sun was getting low and 1st stop was at a spot I was 2 for 2 on and it didnt disapoint. Pulled about a 3 pounder out of the same hole i got the 5 pounder last week. 3 for 3 aint to bad!! Was worried though cause we hit that spot on the way in with nothing to show for it.

My GF was was getting a bit aggravated since she still hasnt gotten anything again. I texas rigged up a finesse worm for her and figured she would get something on the way back in working some lay downs. Unfortunately she had another skunk today! It made it even worse when i nailed a biggun of about 4 pounds 20 feet in front of where she was fishing. The whole time i'm fighting it with drag screaming and it making nice jumps and me shouting out a few Yee-Ha's and telling her it was a good one........ she's giving me the eveil eye and shaking her head and saying.... Shut Up... I dont care your just lucky as hell.....lol.

By the way, that last bass of the day came from behind a bush on the down current side and was the same spot i picked one up yesterday. Guess i'm 2 for 2 on that spot!

Im new to bass fishing but watch alot of WFN and alot of bass fishing videos on you tube and researched the forums and have learned enough, I guess, to at least find a few here and there. I keep offering up tips for her but i think that aggravates her even more...lol. Even after the research i've tried to do and like I've told her, the most important part of catching them is just putting the lure in the right place at the right time.

Im certainly not setting it on fire but so far I'm loving the Bass Yakin and cant wait to get back out there. Might even pull my power boat out of its slip way early this year. I havent even seen it in a month...lol. And I'm certainly not missing the fuel cost of my boats 496 MAG engine!

Heres a few pics from today.

Has anyone ever seen a black squirrel??? Seen a few of these at mariner Point this year.

I beached the yak today where I always see people fishing off the bank at the south end of the quarry. I followed the trail hoping for easy acess there. Looks like it comes out behind a church but there is a real steep hill with built in steps to get down to the water. No way I'm taking my kayak up and down that.

I think i know the trail your talking about on the north side. Thats a pretty long walk down there from the road. My nephew lives at the 3rd or 4th house when you turn left on Towne center drive and have thought about dropping the yaks at the trail opening and parking at his house and walk them down. Might have to give that a try sometime.

Forgot my battery box today but i think when I was back there last week, the deepest area I saw was about 12 feet deep but havent really covered the whole quarry.

Nice job. I had a great outing at Mariner's earlier in the summer. I didn't know there were Pickeral in there. There are Black squirrels everywhere. I tgink they are a variant of the normal Grey Squirrels. I have three or four around my house.

Nice reports. Not to mess with your success, but I've done well in the coves out beyond the railroad bridge. On the left as you are headed out. It was earlier in the season and the weed beds were just emerging. I've also hooked into some huge carp that felt the need to hit my rattle trap out there.

Personally, I would like to find an area there that hold crappie. Any suggestions anbody???

Something was definitely off with the fishing this weekend, especially Saturday. I cast into places I absolutely expected to get a hit and time after time got nothing. The weeds overall seemed a little less dense in a lot of areas this weekend. Maybe there were too many days of very low water conditions recently that killed off some of the weeds and convinced the fish to move out.

The black squirrels are common in the DC area, but I've never seen them up here. Wow, that's cool.
