  • Bay Bridge 1/5/14 - Cold, but pleasant

The Sandy Point boat ramps had ice, as expected... a little more than a half inch, for about 20 feet out. Nothing an evolve/mirage powered yak can't easily break through though.

With the air temperature 32 to 36 this morning, I put my cold gear to the test. I was toasty throughout, due in large part to the absence of wind. You can see from the pics how flat it was out there. I only saw one boat all day. It was cool seeing thick ice on the rockpiles.

I marked a decent amount of fish, but getting them to bite was tough. I only managed a nice fat and strong 24" striper near the western rockpile, on the bottom as the outgoing current peaked. I was using a 1oz jighead with chartreuse 6" BKD.

I'm glad I got out. It was very peaceful... And I got my first 2014 fish.

Yes, Mojo stayed home. Too cold for even the hairiest of fishing dogs.

Nice fish Mike. Those look like strong sonar marks. I'm surprised you only got one.

Mojo probably would have been fine......but then he would have missed the football game.

I was jigging. Dead sticking around there in the current might be a recipe for a quick snag. I could be wrong...

Mojo had female company at home, so he did not mind
