  • REDRUM of the Red Drum - Kipto 10/12/13

Shady, Sun and I were at Kiptopeke looking for tog yesterday. We caught a few shorts, but that was not to be the highlight of our trip. Instead, we found red drum. Not one, not 2 or 3... but 99 red drum, all between 21" and 26".

I'm only exaggerating a little, because Shady has photographic evidence of his 20 redfish for kayak wars, and Sun and I had a bit more time on the fish than he did. I estimate that Sun caught 30 and I caught somewhere around 25. Our drags got a workout.

The drum ate EVERYTHING we threw at them, including topwater plugs, gulp mullets, redfish magics, purple swimbaits,.... the only thing that did not result in an immediate hookup was a whole crab that I tried for kicks.

We got lucky. They were there. Sun found them for us. Often, all 3 of us were hooked up at the same time. We were laughing hysterically.

And to think we almost did not go. The wind report on Friday looked terrible, but Sun said "I'm going!" so we went... thank you Sun!

Dang! You take the wx chance and you get rewarded. WTG! That's the same place we tried two weeks ago and got nothing. If I go back next weekend, they'll probably be gone again.....lol...

Nice fish, and thanks for the report.

.. I agree that was an awesome picture. It is one of my favorite of the group. I can't imagine catching catching over 20 redfish.

I did stop by the parking lot, and saw everyone already working the ships. I went a little north to a private launch on a creek. I should have saved the gas! That's fun stuff when the reds are thick and pulling drag. I did have a good day as well...three pups 22-23", couple of rock, and five specks up to 19" However, I wish I had stayed, if only to witness some of those expressions lol
