What used to be Slavins is a first rate facility, and FREE! No state park hands in your wallet. They even have a Hobie rental facility. The only negative might be the drive thru the residential area from Indian Head Rd. Radar is a likely hazard. The biggest negative from Smallwood aside from the fees would be boat traffic. The lower Mattawoman is very popular. Hope I can make it to this one.

AND it has 6 miles of "No Wake" zone- better for us small paddle boats- Smallwood Park is very nice but because it is so nice, it has lots of boat traffic- Snakeheads are supposed to be very fine food fish, but use heavy mono leaders or light wire

Yep, can do. I'll look for a place we can gather for a late lunch BEFORE the fishing. This will be a late afternoon/evening trip. For those of you who have never fished here you're in for a treat. Hard to believe you're in a major metro area and a stones throw from the nation's capital! Bring your lights and bug spray!

Note what Ron and Capt-C mentioned. Very true. No speeding on Rt.210 and no speeding boats in the creek. Perfect! Tides are perfect for July 9th, too. 3pm is high and low is at 8:48pm. We'll be fishing a falling tide. When the tide is high the fish are likely way back in the brush. With a falling tide they'll start moving towards the creek channel. Launch at 3pm, move upstream and ride the outgoing tide back to the launch.

I wanted to catch a snakehead as it's been one of my goals this year...in fact, the only one left for me to knock off. Does anyone have a lure that seems to work. After reading a lot of descriptions, it's basically like bass fishing except you may catch either a bass or a snakehead. I don't know anyone who's caught one so I don't know if that means finesse type plastics or search lures like spinner and crank baits.

The snakehead is an ambush predator much like bass, pike and musky- they eat anything and everything- Buzz baits, Devil's Horse, Torpedos, top water chuggers, rebel wind cheaters, Bomber A's, most any crank bait...loud, splashy baits should draw strikes if you can get them back in heavy cover-

I might have to hit there during the week and get some intel on the area. I live 30 miles from there and have never fished that area. Might be an after work trip planed there this week.

I'm thinking some weighted senkos fished slow during the day and moving to top-water baits at dusk. Man i have to look thru my freshwater tackle and see what i have on hand.

I know it is a little expensive but I really like the Yak-attack Visipole, comes with light and flag, $89??, I used a flush mount Scotty, nice and easy to install. It will also fit into some built-in rod holders or easily mountable on crates.

Have also seen some other very good ideas here on the forum for less expnesive mounts and lights.

I just use small clip on lights http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009NZNT6, red on the front and white in the back. I usually have them on strobe setting since the batteries last a lot longer. I've also got an LED hand flashlight if I need more lighting, but a headlamp is probably better since it frees up your hands.
