Yeah the kayak is solid, I used to have one. There are definitely more relaxed areas of the inlet/ rt 50 bridge area with less boats and current. I think if you stick with another kayaker you should be just fine.

The style of fishing is pretty basic so that is not an issue either, just whether you would be comfortable or not... and there will be a good amount of us out there keeping and eye on each other.

Also all with a VHF will scan a station and be in contact.

New to this forum and kayak fishing. Would love to go to a meet and greet and learn a few things. I've got pretty good experience with the inlet and surrounding waters from shore and party boat, but little small boat experience. How beginner friendly is this particular trip?

BTW, the aforementioned tackle shop is Fenwick Tackle, associated with Oyster Bay Tackle on 116th in OC. Nice people around there.

      Thanks, J

As I have never fished OC, I need some guidance.
I will have 2 canoes, 3 kayaks so I plan on scooting to the saftey of the bay??

What type tackle should we bring ??
        live bait bottom rigs?
Road Runners with 6" grubs ?

Stear me in the right direction,

1-3oz jigheads and 4inch GULP! swimming mullet in white/pink/chart. this is really all you need you can catch everything that swims in the inlet on this combo. 3oz when the current is moving

            Thanks Pinch,
none of my craft have anchors, do most yakkers just drift fish this area?
            No live bait bottom fishing?

            Thanks,
            Slack

Ive found it easier to drift/ use drift anchor and sit in the eddies formed by the current on the backside of the bridge. Live bait will work but its easier to jig and not worry about multiple rods.

OK, heres my inexperianced plan: (see attached picture)

Since I will have a family of 5, they like to beach and wade/fish, etc.
Are we allowed to beech and roam on Assat island ? (yellow # 1, 2, 3, 4)
Is there any good fishing by tying off to the bridge ? (#5)
What about the island near the 50 bridge (#6)

Currently I have no anchors, I hate to have to outfit 4-5 boats with anchors.
My wife and 2 younger kids would be happy beaching on Assat and wading, claming, crabing, etc. My brother, older son and I would paddle/drift in the general area,

Anyone that knows the area, let me know if this would work ??

                Thanks,

                        Hey slackdaddy,
                        Thanks for the welcome.

The area around the 50 bridge, on the down currant side from my experience (fishing from the bridge itself), is very good for fluke, and there are always small-medium blues in the area and occasionally stripers. The tides move pretty quick through this area at times as all the water in the bay gets funnelled under the bridge and out the inlet.

Boat traffic is going to be dense in and around the inlet and the vacation power-boating crowd is not the most courteous and aware group.

For quiet waters, the area behind the airport in Assateague bay has been getting some great reports for fluke (running about 20-1 short to keeper, but still fun fishing). Jigging with gulp, or the standard three-way with a minnow and squid strip on a 2/0 or 3/0 khale have been producing well. I'm pretty sure this area is reachable by yak, but I've never covered the distance with a paddle.

I'd love to get down there and try with my yak. I'll see if I can make it work.

Where does the info on when/where people are meeting get posted? Will the info come up on this thread as the time grows closer?

                        Thanks, J

Looks like I may make it now. Not sure I'm gonna be in for the inlet but the Bay side sounds like a good time. I work from 3p-11p on Friday and may just drive straight down after I get off work. Do they allow anyone to sleep in their vehicles on the parking lot at the launch site? plan to sleep on the beach after then head home.

Pinch slept at Royal Farms for a few hours one night before we fished. I'm sure you would be fine sleeping in your car the the commercial ramp.
