It was my standard YP setup. Two 2" grubs tied directly to the line, drop shot style. In my opinion, things are just starting up. I would think they'll be around for at least a couple of weeks. I'm going to try getting up there again either Friday or Saturday.

3 species for me today Ended up with 3 keepers and 30-40 fish overall. Used a 1/2 ounce spoon with a jig head 8 inches up tipped with a minnow. About 50/50 ratio of fish on the spoon or minnow. Most productive depth for me was 50-60 fow.

I'm not sure it will last very long out in the deep. I stopped by Greys run on the way home and there were a few guys fishing there. I saw them catch several small male YP and they said they were starting to catch a few just barely keeper females.

For those that dont know, Greys run is popular stream where a lot of people fish when the perch start actually spawning. It is off of the Bush river and access to fish it is off route 40 in Perryman, md. I think the big fish out in the deep in the Susky may only last another week and then they'll be up in the creeks. A lot of people have already reported catching big perch at creek mouths.

I am humbled by the depth of knowledge that many of you have about, not only HOW to catch fish, but also your understanding of the life cycles and patterns of the fish you target (which obviously helps you catch them). I find all this fascinating. Know the fish = catch the fish.

Just looked up http://www.dnr.state.md.us/fisheries...ellowperch.asp that explains briefly the spawning of YP. Cool stuff.

I'm glad I caught some fish today. My last time up in Perryville a couple weeks ago was less than ego-tripping, with me catching NOTHING and Edgewater, one yak over, getting 40. Can't wait for the next M & G and I hope the weather cooperates and more people can come.

I agree, It was a great day. Alan, thanks for the tips and also finding the schools of fish for me (me no have fish finder).

For the record, I had only caught one fish until I met up with Yak Fish. Two minutes after talking with Yak, fish on....


I remember thinking on the way to the launch site, it's snowing....what the hell am I doing fishing in mid 30 temperatures. I'm glad to have found people that share the same interest as I do (what a bunch of....extremist). I love fishing, enough said!

On a side note, my feet were freezing. When I got off my yak, it hurt to walk...a stingily feeling. I might have overstayed my boundaries on this one. I can't wait for the next adventure, this forum (sorry Mediyak) rocks.

lol bigfluke45 (Robert) beat us on the catfish. He probably caught atleast 4 or 5 and one that I saw was pretty big for a channel cat, maybe 10 pounds.

Did you guys keep any catfish, or were they all released and you only kept yellows?

I'm not really to into eating channel catfish, but if I do keep one to eat, I prefer to eat the channel cats that are only about 15 inches and the one I caught today was a good bit bigger than that.

Also, I caught and kept a bunch of flatheads last weekend and they are a lot better eating than channel cats in my opinion.

Great Time!

I sure am glad I canceled my plan to cancel my plan. It was a fun day on the water, and I actually caught fish! I did have some doubts as I was driving up with snow falling, but I kept going with the assurance that I had a backup plan to fish from the docks if the water was rough. By the end of the day I think I caught around 20 perch with 3 that came home with me. They were in the 10 to 12 inch range. I'm pretty sure some of the ones I let go were legal size, but they just didn't seem like they'd have much meat to eat.

The day started out very slow for the first hour or so (0 hits, 0 fish). At one point Luke and I were talking about how much it stunk that we weren't getting any fish. Then we saw YakFish pulling up some fish. We headed over to him, and got some tips about where the fish were (depth-wise), and I tried to stick to the pattern. It was hard staying at the right depth, because I was drifting so quickly. I did a lot of paddling today. One time, I had drifted pretty close to the docks without realizing it. An older guy there reminded me real politely by casting some lead about 3 feet away from me. I made sure to move out of his casting range.

All of my fish, but 1, were caught on minnows today. I had a rod with 2" squirmin' squirt tube jigs, but the reel jammed up on me after my first perch on that rig. Luckily I had another rod, and it was rigged for live minnows (1 oz lead, 2 dropper loops with size 1 circle hooks). I had just spooled the one that broke down with 5 lb power pro too...I'm going to be doing some reel maintenance this week.

Lunch at tidewater grille was good. We learned that YakFish is the master of the Susquehanna like how JA Veil is the master of the Severn. Mullet Miller stopped by too, with his son, to share with us about the kayak fishing jamboree in April.

The 3 fish are cleaned and are waiting to be fried. 2 of them were females, and 1 was a male. I fried the roe and tried it with my wife. It tasted alright. I think I'll need a few more trials to make it great.

After cleaning one of the fish, I noticed a smaller fish sticking out of its guts. It looked like a small 2" bunker or something. Check it out! I didn't cut open the perch's stomach, so that's the fish still inside the stomach.
