Ok, i'm sorry to go slightly off topic here, but I gotta know... what is that tallish cylindrical thing behind your stack of books? I've seen it in a few pics already, looks like an interesting piece...

Ahaha, It's actually something that is really cool although not many people know what they are. It's a binnacle and is used as navigation on old time ships. Inside is a large 8" Ritchie compass from 1907 that completely gimbals to keep it level as the ship would sway. There are magnetic rods (unfortunately missing), and chains that adjust the compass to compensate for the iron in the ships that affect the pointing of the compass.

So really, the binnacle is used to hold the compass, protect it, compensate for the iron effects on magnetism and to provide a location for a gas lamp to view the compass at night. It's tough to find one, especially in this good shape.

MOC gave me a heads up that he'd called Clyde's about the book and they didn't know what he was talking about. I just called up Clyde and he started laughing and apologized....I'd just dropped them off before closing yesterday and he hadn't had the chance to put them out yet.
