  • What a day on the Eastern Shore

yakscientist (Pat) and I had a blast chasing snakeheads today. Between about 8am-2pm we landed 9, and we both lost just as many. Pat landed 3 mid-20's fish and lost several monsters, and I landed 3 over 30 and 3 mid-20's, the biggest 35 and about 15 lbs. Unfortunately for me, my first 3 fish including the largest, got donated back when my stupid stringer came undone. I can assure you that will never happen again!!! Neither of us had successfully landed a snakehead before, so we were more than happy with today's outcome. We started with minnows and various lures, but didn't land the first fish until maybe 10:30. After that it was game on, and I caught the biggest fish of the day right after that. Every fish today came on chatterbaits. These damn things are so aggressive and slimy, really a challenge to subdue at or in the boat. The key here is to kill them as quickly as possible. I'm definitely doing this again! If my video works out I'll post that later.

I really like the taste...IMHO better than striped Bass...and you cannot say that they don’t give you a good fight...they are absolute escape artists...you don’t have one until it is being cleaned...

Fine job! I said that I would be chase some snakeheads this year as well. I know there are lots in Mallows Bay and in Dogue Creek off the Potomac. Brian if you find out about a place and want to plan a trip, let me know. I am eager to see how they taste!

Yes I’ve heard of the Potomac and on the shore. I just need to plan and commit to a day and go.

How far back into Dogue Creek do you venture to target snakehead? I never realized it was right across from Marshall Hall, but I’ve only launched from there twice. Both times i was fishing for blue cats.

I normally start out at the boat dock on Ft. Belvoir. I can go a little farther into the creek with my yak but I normally launch in my bass boat. As it is a long way to the Potomac. However, Yakscientist got his personal best blue cat on New Year’s Day right there at the corner where creek meets river. The red navigation buoy your steer to that is to the left of Marshall Halls dock is a near the place to be do cats. Working the edges of the wis the way to go for sneakheads as the creek starts to choke up with vegetation
