Been doing a little bass fishing from the yak lately and after some success at Matawomen a couple weeks ago I want more action so went to mariner point the last 2 weekends hoping for some local action.
Sunday 8-18 Was my 1st time getting all the way to the quarry. Thats actually a longer run than I thought it would be. definately have to find a short cut I can get the hobie through. Wound up with 3 bass and a small yellow perch that day. Got the 1st fish of close to 4 lbs out around the 2nd point before going into the canal leading to the quarry. saw the fish jump completely out of the water about 50 yards from where i was fishing and put on a popper and worked that area hard for about an hour and finally got him. Had a nice explosion when he hit and a few more jumps bringing it in.
Then headed up the canal and the current was ripping through there. unfortunately it was outgoing. Pedaled all the way to the quarry and fished for a couple hours but no love there. decided I would drift back out the canal and fish the shore lines. lots of lay downs to hit. stopped at the little island before the quarry opening where alot of people were bank fishing. while talking to a few folks there was a big splash near the island and i pedaled over and tossed a big jig and craw down between a couple logs where the splash came from. no sooner than it hit the water and sunk a couple feet, i gave it a twitch and thought I was hung till i felt the head shakes and then muscled it out of the structure. It gave a great fight with multiple jumps while circling my kayak and pulling drag. turned out to be a nice chunk of near 5 lbs. I let out a big HELL YEAH after landing it and the bank fishermen were even cheering me on....lol. That definately made my day!
After a few more casts in the area, decided to go ahead and drift back out the canal and hit the shore lines. By this time the current was coming back in. i still stooped at a few lay downs and picked up another small bass and even a small yellow perch that hit a small jig with a green pumkin twister tail.
Worst part about that trip was i went solo and only had my cell phone to try to get pics of the big one. snapped a couple but they turned out like crap IMO. I think it might be time to get a GoPro and a measuring device.

Went out again today for a few hours after a real late start and picked up 3 bass. my GF went today but she got skunked. she was grumbling that she finally learned how to catch Rockfish in the bay (on our power boat) and now that im into bass fishing, she has to learn a completely new way to fish....lol. I have no doubts she'll pick it up pretty quick though. She's a quick learner and a pretty good fisherwomen. She did have one hit but lost it when her leader came un-done from the braid and swears I tied that knot...lol. Today i used a texas rigged finesse worm around the wood to get my 3. wew were all the way back near the quarry when the sun set and tried some top water frog fishing on the way in but it got dark real fast and either one of us has lights on the yak. It gets Freakin Dark back there!!! I turned my FF around to give me a little light and so others could see us but unfortunately the battery died about halfway back. cant understand why though. It was only my 7th trip out without charging....lol. Havent picked up a charger for my new setup yet.
So now not only do i need a better camera setup & A measuring device, I need to rig up some lights and pick up a charger.
We are heading back out there tomorrow to check out some other areas and hoping for even better luck!
