  • Mattawoman 4/13

Launched from the 225 bridge around 0630 this morning on an outgoing tide. Pretty good bite while the tide was running but it died off as the sun got higher. Ended up with 2 rock at 14 and 16 inches, around a dozen bass, 2 snakeheads including my new pb at 32 inches, a handful of yellow perch, and 2 herring??? Most bass and the snakeheads came on a chartreuse chatterbait with a white paddle tail trailer run over and along the channel edges. The spatterdock is just starting to come up and there is a new tree across the river you need to portage around if you launch from 225. I'm guessing the fish in the last photo is a herring???

You sure had a successful day of catching -- well done!

A southern MD fishing guide (Dennis Fleming) posted on Tidalfish the other day that he had caught hickory shad in Mattawoman. I was not aware that they came into Mattawoman. Your last photo looks like a shad to me.

Looked at some other photos and it does look like a hickory shad. There were a few small schools in the upper sections, Just had to look for the bald eagles and osprey to find them.

That's the 1st documented sh catch I've seen for 2014. I've been looking but not finding them yet. Nice job!

Nice fish! Your feet have the same shade of pink that mine do. I should have listened to my daughter and put sunscreen on, oh well this too shall pass, then I shouldn't burn again (this summer).

That fish is definately in the shad/herring family, but I'm not sure it's a Hickory?

Thanks for the link. I think it matches the description of a hickory. The lower jaw definitely jutted out farther than the upper and you can kind of see the spot right behind the gill plate. I think the other one I caught was an American Shad now though as it had a line of spots.

How deep was the water you caught your fish in?

Nice report! Looks like a great day on the water for everyone except for Mr. Snakehead!

Blueblack Herring also run up Mattawoman to spawn. They look similar to Hickory Shad but based on the extended lower jaw and size I think you are correct on it being a Hickory.

Always a good day when there's a snakehead murder in the kayak!

So what's the deal with getting around the downed tree when launching from the bridge. Any tips on going right or left would be helpful.

                          Thanks,

                          Tom

                            Nice catch chimo.
Don't know what I was thinking. I went down to Marshall Hall and got ran out by the wind and motor boats.
I should have joined you down at Mattawoman.

                            Cheers

It's pretty obvious when you see the tree but you have to go up over the bank and over the tree to the left. It's just a pain with a heavy loaded kayak. Maybe one of the guys I talked to will follow through with his threat to bring his chainsaw down and clear a path.

Most of the fish were caught on the channel edges were it broke from -1ft deep to +/- 6ft. The spot was even better if there was a little spatterdock growing on the edge.
