I was glad to make this M&G at CHSP. I didn’t do too well there, but would definitely go again. After lunch Moc, Surfdog and I hit RI. That was also my first time there. I have no complaints about RI, especially since I caught my first flounder which was a keeper at 18”. Here is a before and after picture of the flounder. The fish was topped with backfin crabmeat and baked. I also made mac & cheese, asparagus, mango salsa and a fresh blueberry sauce.

This was the August Meet and Greet hosted by SurfDog (John). I arranged to meet up with Grady Black (Mike) at the Wawa at 4:00am. I got there just a little early to pick up some supplies, but Mike was not far behind. We left at 4:10am and made it to Cape Henlopen by 6:00am and met John (SurfDog). We would have been there a little earlier, but we made a wrong detour along the way. Cape Henlopen is really an easy drive and only 90 to 105 mins from the Bay Bridge. By the time that we got there, we heard that Pinch and Yakfisher Josh had already launched along with Chimo (Wayne). Not far behind us was Shield (Don). Later that morning around 8:00am Tufnik would join the group.
The water was calm and protected. The air temperature would only be in the 80's and overcast. I did not see the bad weather that the weathermen were predicting of rain and 20 mph winds and 4 foot seas. I am glad that I went and that I did not let the weather make me change my mind. I launched and immediately tried drifting for flounder on the slopes and holes on the way to the rock wall with the red light house. I tried a fish finder rig tipped with a Gulp swimming mullet and squid. I got plenty of nibbles, and some good pulls, but no fish got hooked. I tried tossing and retrieving a 1/4 ounce jig head tipped with Gulp, but got the same result. I fished with Don (Shield) all the way around the point of Cape Henlopen into the ocean side. The current was stronger there and the rolling waves were 2 to 3 feet at times. We fished near the base of the second rock wall with the white light house. We saw plenty of fish stacked up on the fish finder, but still no takers. After seeing a rainbow, watching some dolphins follow our yaks, , and seeing the Cape May - Lewes ferries shuttle passengers back and forth, I decided to hit the end of first seawall where the current was slow, and throw some more jigs. That is where I started landing 10 inch snapper blue fish and some small croakers. I fillet the blue fish and used it to tip my jig head along with gulp. That is when I caught my first keeper flounder of the day. The rest of my catches were small fish. Fishing was slow. Don caught a 14 inch shark and Tufnik and Chimo caught a keeper flounder. Mike and SurfDog were fishing from the pier and alerted us that a storm was coming. It was about time to meet for lunch, so I decided to head in. Don also decided to head back to shore. Tufnik decided to stay out until he caught all of the fish that he desired. On the way back the clouds got darker. We heard one loud sound of thunder and then the rain poured in. It lasted about 45 mins, with two breaks in between. We packed up our gear and headed to lunch with SurfDog at an Irish Dock Pub. Don, myself and Chimo followed SurfDog to the restaurant. Grady Black had opted to head home with his keeper flounder, while Turfnik tuffed it out on the water. We tried to call him several times and left him voicemail as to our location, but we never heard from him. We hope old Tuffy made it back OK. As far as Pinch and Yakfisher goes, we think they stayed out there to spearfish.
The food was good at the Irish Dock Bar. It was situated on the canal with water views. After a late lunch, Chimo headed home. John, myself and Don headed to the Roosevelt Inlet. At the inlet, I saw that it was high tide and the water was calm. Don and I launched our yaks. John decided to head back to crash and get some sleep to fish in the morning before leaving Lewes.
Fishing the Roosevelt Inlet was the right choice. Don and I got plenty of nibbles, catching small black seabass and short flounders. Don even caught two big oyster toads. The highlight for me was catching 3 keeper flounder (18 to 19inches) inlet making my total for the day a whopping 4 keeper flounders....the maximum for Delaware. Don also got his hirst keeper flound of 18inches and lost an even bigger one near the boat. The Roosevelt Inlet was very productive for Don and myself. We had blast. We stopped fishing after 8pm. It was time to pack up and head home. It was another good Meet and Great.
There was one more interesting development of the afternoon. At the Roosevelt Inlet a lady and her family tied up their boat, but she used a thin rope. It must have been old and weak, because as she walked off the boat dock, her rope snapped and the motor boat floated away into the Inlet. There were no other boats around. I had just climbed out of my yak when I saw SUPER DON SHEILD jump into action. He turned his Hobie ProAngler around and grabbed the rope on the boat. He then toed the boat all the way back to the dock under human power. Well, I got pictures if you do not believe me. All I have to say is that some kayaks toe other kayaks, but some kayaks toe boats! Way to go Don!Last edited by moc; 08-13-2012, 02:17 AM.
